a3w commented on All managers make mistakes; good managers acknowledge and repair   terriblesoftware.org/2025... · Posted by u/matheusml

IME the gap in management between ICs is accountability. It's easy to say you are sorry, or say things won't happen again but good management, and what I strive to do is hold myself accountable.

To me, that means 1. To identify the issue that occurred (especially when you caused it), and much more importantly, 2. Put systems into place that prevent it from happening again.

Employees can feel very clearly when a manager lacks accountability and as part of mid and especially high level management (if your goal is actually improving both output and quality of people's lives) to not just say you did something wrong, but actually put your skin in the game ensuring what happened will not happen again (usually it means being better at saying no or aggressively managing prioritization rather than heaping additional tasks on people).

Will a manager that acknowledges his/her/their mistakes get promoted as frequently, as if when downplaying them?

What matters most is training, post-training, fine-tuning and data scraping, not inference IMO. The "prompting destroys the environment" deal always seemed sensationalistic to me, I'm glad it's starting to be debunked, but at the same time we can see IRL the heavy toll the new data centers being built are taking on the energy grid. If the tech was lean at it's heart in terms of energy consumption, we wouldn't be seeing that or even the private nuclear reactor arms race by big tech.

Yupp, plus the fact that I unwillingly send prompts out by visiting a website that now has a chatbot nag me; Among other annoyances in the economy of scale that say "if it is cheap, just use more of it".

In Germany, we had a private company that offered a service no one needed to pay the household bill on public broadcasting.

If their SEO ranking beats the official site, they could confuse the hell out of people. (And I am told people do not use uBlock or Pihole everywhere, so paid ads would work, too.)

They seem to leave the market, perhaps due to being sued they cannot make a profit: https://www.verbraucherzentrale-niedersachsen.de/themen/kauf...

Finances and Contracts are for me the same folders.

Also, spaces in folders will absolutely break my legacy scripts on `~` at a future time when I re-run them.

Demo is not that convincing. Also, I need multilanguage support, and am not clear if OCR for PDFs before running is done by this. (Which again, needs beforehand knowledge of which language the document might be in?)

But, cheap, and pay once and offline. Will keep an eye on it.

I think the german names of Überwald are not just german sounding, but the author really meant it: A Klotz is a brick or block.

"some theories of the time held that they turned into other kinds of birds, mice, or hibernated underwater"

What did people in Africa think? I mean, they also saw birds disappearing.

a3w · 7 days ago
That "birds hibernated on the moon" is even stranger, unless you are into 18xx sci-fi.

That should be an Appclip by PureGym. Or of course, a single-time wallet export. Or a physical one euro dongle, so you can leave your phone at home.

This website could have been written by an LLM. Real life is for humans, because you can verify that people you have shaken hands with are not AI. Even if people you've shaken hands with are AI-assisted, they're the editor/director/auteur, nothing gets out without their approval, so it's their speech. If I know you're real, I know you're real. I can read your blog and know I'm interacting with a person.

This will change when the AIs (or rather their owners, although it will be left to an agent) start employing gig workers to pretend to be them in public.

edit: the (for now) problem is that the longer they write, the more likely they will make an inhuman mistake. This will not last. Did the "Voight-Kampff" test in Bladerunner accidentally predict something? It's not whether they don't get anxiety, though, it's that they answer like they've never seen (or maybe more relevant related to) a dying animal.

It never said "this website stems from a human".
