While I’m all for privacy, I don’t see why people should not pay for using their apps. Running a platform costs tons of money. Any operator has to make their income from somewhere. In case of FB, it’s through displaying ads; or paying a fee. One can argue the fee is too high and request a reduction. Or quits using the app. The choice always exist. But nothing in this world is free.

Social networking as a fundamental human right? I find the idea ludicrous, but if, then request the governments to build and operate them.

It is probably smart to keep around a certain capacity of nonrenewables to provide at least some base load. Long periods of low sunshine and slow winds could deplete batteries to a critical level. Also, the turbines of big powerplants act as grid frequency stabilizer. Do grid-scale batteries use alternators or might they run flywheels?
VaxWithSex · 2 years ago
Batteries can and are used for frequency stabilization, yes.

Someone said it, amen.

I would care what China would do if China was going around the world killing millions of people in the name of "national security".

Alas, so far that privilege went to Great Britain, France (Napoleon), Germany, US and recently Russia and Isreal.

Still no China on that radar.

> Nuclear is emphatically not an instant-on hot backup. Plants take time to spool up, and very importantly time to cool down

All modern nuclear plants work in load following mode with ability to change ant the rate of 3-5% of their rated capacity per minute.

Graph and text on page 8: https://www.oecd-nea.org/upload/docs/application/pdf/2021-12...

> Fukushima happened because you can't just turn a reactor off,

Fukushima happened because the plant was hit with both an earthquake and a flood significantly exceeding its operational parameters (already extremely high)

VaxWithSex · 2 years ago
Nobody seems to get that these operational parameters were set and approved and told to be save and then they were still exceeded, lol.

Yeah so this is indicative of the fact that you don't really have ANY experience with modern Linux. You can take a well supported laptop and install Linux Mint on it and everything will just work, no tweaking required. Try it sometime before making 10 year old arguments that Mac users were making back in the day and apparently still do now.

Furthermore, Id go even further and argue that as a developer, learning how to configure basic documented things should be something that you know and is fairly straightforward for you to to do, just like installing tooling you need for your development.

Yes, but it's not going to have any meaningful impact on the overall gdp because it couldn't happen at scale (requires one party to have 1.000.000$ to spend in the first place).

It sounds like you also need an AI to generate that mispricing. Like a form of SEO, the misinformation bots tweet to all the trading bots and try to trick them into mispricing shares, so your trading bots can quickly gain advantage. Corewars using the world economy.

what exactly is 10x better than 5 years ago? the technology gets better but the outcome gets worse somehow.

most of the programs i use (besides the browser) are 20-50 years old (paste, cut, xterm, grep, emacs etc), almost any new thing i try is horribly slow (slack, whatsapp etc, the mac terminal app, even the mail app is slow compared to mutt)

open a web page on a computer without adblock and look at what we have built

It ended up being so complex, that none of the implementations were up to spec, and hardly any 2 implementations talked to each other out of the box. i.e. the exact opposite it was meant to do.

Do you actually work in smalltalk or is it just your hobby language of choice?
VaxWithSex · 2 years ago
I wrote my Bachelor and Master thesis with it. I thought about working at HRWorks, but then decided to do Python and now TypeScript. I'm learning Rust now, just because how the closures look a bit similar to Smalltalk since I miss it so much.
