> So let me get this straight: The US government directly buying stakes in Intel is A-OK

For America, yes. For China, no.

> but any involvement from the CCP in any form in any company is Not Good ?

For America, yes. For China, no.

This isn't a case where the "principled high road" has any practical meaning. This is a "You want your side to win but you want their side to lose? You're a hypocrite!" situation.

Tyrek · 4 months ago
Sure the "principled high road" has meaning. Coming out of the 90's, the US had a dominant position in international institutions and a 'vibe' that it was willing to subordinate its interests in favor of the global community. The post GWOT shift to a 'selfish' position, clearly illustrated here by your argument, reflects the absolute cratering of international public opinion, and frankly the collective loss of trust in a less selfish America.

Why take that chance, for some slightly cheaper routers?

I have respect for human creativity, and the limits of public servants. Its not easy to keep constant vigilance against all possible backdoors. Easier to restrict core infra devices from openly hostile areas.

Why take the chance that the food you buy from the grocer may be contaminated? I have respect for human creativity, and the limits of farmers. It's not easy to keep constant vigilance against all sources of contamination. Easier to restrict food to only what you produce yourself.

Glibness aside, there's clearly a continuum to the concept of 'we live in a society', and to how far the monkey brain's tribe extends. But the argument against routers is clearly arising from a biased set of priors, whether fairly or unfairly.

> I know that's the conspiracy theory, but shouldn't we be asking for evidence?

No. This is about using reason to anticipate and prevent problems, not dumbly waiting around until the actualized problem stares you in the face and it's too late to do anything about it.

But if you want evidence, all that is needed is the evidence that China and the US are adversaries.

Tyrek · a year ago
That's a farcically absurd statement given the context. Following this logic, Japan and the US being adversaries is the only justification you need for Japanese internment camps.

“Against the public interest” might contain a clue for the distinction they’re making.
Tyrek · 2 years ago
"Against the public interest" is the vaguest bar for investigation I can imagine, it's even vaguer than "probable cause" in policing! As long as you can find a person who disagrees (and presumably pays taxes), you're good to go on "against the public interest"?

I think this highlights an actually disturbing trend of billionaire’s buying establish mass media.

Laurene Powell Jobs buying Atlantic, Jeff Bezos buying Washington Post, Elon Musk buying Twitter.

won't someone think of the multimillionaires who were outbid when trying to buy mass media?
Tyrek commented on Why the 2% inflation target? (2023)   sites.lsa.umich.edu/mje/2... · Posted by u/luu
ajross · 2 years ago
You understand that the paragraph you quoted was a didactic illustration[1], not a description of reality, right? In fact inflation is sitting right at 3% right now, not at the 2% target but hardly very far off.

> The real question is Who is in charge here? If the Fed was, they would and could get in front of inflation and raise rates

They... did?

[1] Specifically of the situation where a change of target rate (which, again, is not happening) would be interpreted by the market as a loss of control.

Tyrek · 2 years ago
Trailing 12 Mths Inflation: 3.2% (Headline) 3.8% (Core). In both cases, it's at least 50% above target. While a smaller gap than in recent years, it's still fairly sizable, all things considered.

Last I heard the largest export for Brazil is their meat. The largest producer of meat is in fact headquartered and based out of Brazil — JBS, SA.

They are a very corrupt entity [1,2,3] and likely have many Brazilian politicians in their pocket/on payroll. The list of controversies this company has would put Goldman Sachs to shame [4]. So it would not surprise me if the government was blind to the destruction of Amazon Rainforest.

At this point, I am okay with the world taking ownership of the Amazon Rainforest and delegating protection to the natives that live in the Amazon Rainforest.

Fuck JBS. Fuck the corrupt Brazilian government.

And how would this transfer take place? With Aircraft carriers and a naval invasion? Are we setting up for Falklands v2.0?

I loosely followed the discussion here on HN, but I don't see any mention of anyone from the Post Office being arrested/prosecuted/sentenced for this.

It seems that some people there abused their power and need to cool down behind bars.

Tyrek · 2 years ago
It's insane to me that most of the heat is being directed at Fujitsu. Sure, there's definitely some culpability there, but the Post Office (especially their legal team) holds the vast majority of the responsibility. There's a lot weighing in on the multi-year investigation that (has been) ongoing, but I can't help but feel like they're waiting for the public furor to cool down before releasing anything.

The budget cycle for 2024 has likely finished so orgs are moving to execute on 2024 plans.

Executives can finalize things a bit more easily when folks out of the office as the day to day a bit slower. HR / Acctg / IT also usually like doing a one off project in these spots - usually a smaller group is in loop on these things.

The week between Christmas and New Years for the quiet meetings and week after for plans to be finished up.

It's year-end close for most companies, so accounting is, uh, not having the best time for projects.

Care to elaborate? No one's right to speech has been affected here; not pg's nor the IDF's. Free speech has never been the right to not be trolled.
Tyrek · 2 years ago
Free speech may not be the relevant criticism here, but there's... somewhat of a discomfort of a government (if admittedly foreign) agency calling out specific individuals. I know we're in the era of terminally online politicians, but this crosses some sort of professionalism boundary?

EDIT: Which is to say, it's not illegal or anything, but I'm sending a frowning emoji.
