Reading Graham's essays on writing always puts me in mind of the videos where Mexican moms react to Rachael Ray trying to cook (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFN2g1FBgVA), or a Malaysian guy has to watch a BBC cook make rice (https://youtu.be/53me-ICi_f8?si=0AaZ82dk_AYFqJAx&t=226).

It helps when you never question if, as in his own essay describing other ‘bad writers’ weaving falsehoods, you’re the one lying to yourself.

What that means, though, is that you have a choice between defining memory unsafely away completely with Rust or Swift, or trying to catch memory problems by a writing a bunch of additional code in Zig.

I’d argue that ‘a bunch of additional code’ to solve for memory safety is exactly what you’re doing in the ‘defining memory safety away’ example with Rust or Swift.

It’s just code you didn’t write and thus likely don’t understand as well.

This can potentially lead to performance and/or control flow issues that get incredibly difficult to debug.

You must mean CuriosityStream because most of my favourite Nebula creators are also YouTubers. Usually, the Nebula version of their video is slightly longer, too.

It could be a time based clause. Nebula exclusive for two weeks prior to any other upload, etc

Nebula, its arms open.

IIRC Nebula has an exclusivity clause in their contract not allowing content creators to upload to other platforms, though I could be thinking of CuriosityStream.

Didn’t know the people behind the mp3 format were into tooling for metalworking. Guess it makes sense, it involves a practical application for use of sound, and they are a research institution.

I wonder if the metal can hear the difference if it’s not the full 192 kHz.

Besides the color temperature, they are way too bright. It's like daylight in front of my house since they changed the lamps.

They shine through my windows at night and are truly horrific.

They’re down the entire alleyway behind my place, and a walk to the grocery store at 7pm during the winter makes your body and mind think it’s sunrise.

Update: I immediately took down my class project site after receiving yesterday’s ultimatum. I still don’t think the simple demo site violated the letter or spirit of the registration rules, but I took it down because I always want to operate in good faith.

They followed up today to thank me for doing it, but also indicated that they were putting a hold on my account anyway. As a result, I am not going to be able to register for my final quarter and have been de facto expelled at the end of this quarter.

Unless, that is, I agree to work on a comparable solution for the university focused on solving the underlying problem I was building HuskySwap for. They would presumably own the IP and were clear that I wouldn’t be compensated. But it was implied that they would then remove the hold, allowing me to graduate.

I really love UW and have had a wonderful time here. But this is so demoralizing.

Update #2:

I appreciate you guys for all of your advice.

This platform was never intended to be monetized, and I am not planning to get a lawyer involved as I have faith that UW leadership will make it right in the end.

I'm not planning to pursue this project at this point. If they came up to me at first with the offer to work with them it might be different, but the way they handled it makes me just want to walk away.
