Reminds me of that Terry Pratchett quote:

"You know how dumb the average person is? Well, statistically, 50% of people are even dumber than that."

I thought that was George Carlin.

it's impossible to tell who is normal in these stories.

for example, the guy can start smoking inside, and it will always smell like smoke.

or, the guy can get his own buzzer.

i've had oversensitive neighbors sit there and bang on pots all night because fireworks or construction noise.

like another comment mentioned, apartments are just built really badly. you can hear anything. which leads to friends of mine complaining about stompers, but to me, they're clearly not stomping. they're just tip-toeing around as quietly as possible. when you get people actually harassing you daily, then you figure out the difference.

if you have to set up a machine or device, then you might be the bad neighbor. this is especially true if they don't set up a machine back at you. that means they're just taking in your harassment and not escalating.

people aren't total idiots. they figure someone is messing with them for their level 15 volume and keep it lower. For anyone with a TV, try putting your volume to 15. Is is unreasonable volume? It's very hard to say who is the psychotic neighbor. I've been on both sides: neighbors that were loud but normal (maybe they had bad hearing, or worked at night), and neighbors that were oversensitive, who were petty and bought machines and devices and sprays to really hurt all of the people who lived around them.

> people aren't total idiots.

You clearly haven't met that many people.

SpaceNoodled commented on Amazon cuts 16k jobs   reuters.com/legal/litigat... · Posted by u/DGAP

This summer I went camping and at the campground next to me was a middle manager at Amazon. I’ve been out of the workforce for about a year, so I asked him how much of an impact AI was having in his role.

He told me that he had worked to develop a tool that would replace effectively all of the middle management function that he was responsible for: gathering information from folks below him, distilling it down and reporting that to people above him.

His hope was that he would be retained to maintain the system that he built, knowing that every other manager at his level was going to be terminated.

It felt like watching someone who is about to be executed be responsible for building the gallows. He should’ve been so aware that his job was going to be the first one cut, and he was responsible for building a tool to cut his own job. But he was optimistic that the cuts wouldn’t come for him

Makes me wonder how he’s doing today

He probably still lives there

It doesn't assume anything. It's literally what's happening right now. All of your neighbors don't want to steal all of your stuff. Think about the fact that this is only true in certain places, regardless of what laws exist. Laws have very little effect on criminal behavior. Your peers being cool people are all that really protects your safety and your property.

Sounds like the solution to crime is therefore to mitigate the factors that precipitate it. If people steal in order to meet their basic needs, then providing basic housing and medical care to all should see a reduction in crime.

I'm sure you could get an LLM to create a plausible sounding justification for every decision? It might not be related to the real reason, but coming up with text isn't the hard part there surely
SpaceNoodled · 13 days ago
It sounds like you're saying we should generate more bullshit to justify bullshit.

As long as we're beating the metaphor... so don't do that? Make sure you charge the battery and that it has enough range to get you home, and bring the charger with you. Or in the LLMs case, make sure it's not generating a ball of mud (code). Refactor often, into discrete classes, and distinct areas of functionality, so that you're never miles from home and out of juice.

At that rate, I would already be there if I had just walked.

On the other hand, if you're an Uber driver it is nice to know the person getting into your car was rated positively (not a dangerous individual, smelling of alcohol, etc.)

But I have actually no idea if drivers can say "no" based on ratings.

In general I would agree with you.

SpaceNoodled · 14 days ago
I'd rather have those smelling of alcohol be passengers than drivers.

I'm very fond of a quote from Tim Minchin that I'll paraphrase as: "I'm not the best singer or the best comedian, but I'm the best voice of all the comedians and I'm the funniest singer."

Don't max one stat. Be a unique, weird combination of several.
