>There is no valid general conversion between speed and Mach number, and things like Mach number relative to the ground is nonsensical.

Sure, if you also want to say water doesn't freeze at 0C or boil at 100C. In practice if an author casually leaves out the variables needed to calculate ground speed from mach or airspeed, it usually means they're doing engineering calculations set at the ISA standard day model (sea level, 15C, no humidity).

Not terribly useful to assume supersonic airflows are occuring at sea level.

But that doesn't mean that tools don't make others lives more difficult.

Missiles as a tool to do damage don't necessarily make other peoples lives easier. But it might make the lives easier of those who wish to do damage.

Technology is a tool, which can be used to make lives easier and harder.

SlickNixon · 2 years ago
"Every person using technology will make every other person's life easier" is not the correct interpretation of the original statement.

Do you agree with their statement on technology as a tool as opposed to something that makes our lives easier then?
SlickNixon · 2 years ago
Can't imagine willingly using a tool that I assess makes my life more difficult.

Google's, for example, is LERS. https://lers.google.com
SlickNixon · 2 years ago
Upvoted. I'd hazard that--

"LERS is a system in which a verified law enforcement agent can securely submit a legal request for user data, view the status of the submitted request, and download the response submitted by Google.

If you are a sworn law enforcement agent or other government official who is authorized to issue legal process in connection with an official investigation, you may submit your request through this system."

--is not the height of transparency, though.

This appears to be for private citizens to report illegal content?

I remember browsing through the Twitter Files and finding nothing interesting in them.

Yes, all social media have open channels with law enforcement. That's because social media have legal obligations and when someone comes to a moderator claiming to be a law enforcement officer working on a kidnapping or preventing a terrorist attack and needing time-sensitive help to save lives, you don't want the moderator to have to guess whether that's a real emergency or a hoax.

It's... not a secret. If you live in a democracy, you can quickly find out the name of these channels, they have websites.

Source: I've been part of a moderation team. Not on something that large, though.

That's interesting, can you link to one?

> Ten people wasting 6 minutes doesn't necessarily waste an hour. No one is curing cancer with the time "saved" from loading GTA Online. More likely than not, they're playing GTA Online 6 minutes less.

That's an assertion. One I don't accept without some strong backing. The extra 5 minutes might mean a discussion somewhere is a bit longer leading to valuable insight. It might mean just trying that last thing before finishing up which you wouldn't try because it shouldn't work anyway. You can imagine any world changing situation which only occurs because of those extra few minutes.

> Why should that problem be prioritized over everything else?

Because it's burning away lifetimes. Besides no one would have complained if this was in the game for a few months and then fixed. It was in the game for YEARS. That is not "prioritzed over everything else" that is "the priority is so low you have to dive to the mariana trench to find the ticket".

I need to see some data on this.

This claim does not look so wild of you encounter people outside your usual educated and smart bubble. Just recently in the sauna a girl explained to me how salt is good to your soul. But not white chemical salt from the store. Only raw salt from under the ground, 10€ per small bottle. She does not sell it, just a victim herself.
SlickNixon · 2 years ago
Maybe she likes the way eating raw salt makes her feel.

> the intern can burn down the entire library of Alexandria with the wrong SQL statement

It's a little ironic to come down negatively on digital data because it can be accidentally deleted easily, when you're comparing it to a library that literally burned down.

> Digital record preservation is hard and gets a lot harder the longer term you try to do it.

Physical record preservation is not walk in the park, either. It's not like paper can just be stored in any old fashion and be expected to not degrade over time.

And with digital records, you can back them up in several different physical locations. With physical records, you're one fire, one burst pipe, one mistake in storage or handling from losing it.

>when you're comparing it to a library that literally burned down

There have been significant improvements in structure fireproofing and firefighting in the past 2071 years.

Is there another noteworthy rocket strike in the vicinity of Al Shifa hospital that the comment you replied to might have been referencing?
