What kind of codebases do you work on if you don't mind me asking?

I've found a huge boost from using AI to deal with APIs (databases, k8s, aws, ...) but less so on large codebases that needed conceptual improvements. But at worst, i'm getting more than 10% benefit, just cause the AI's can read files so quickly and answer questions and propose reasonable ideas.

How are you quantifying that 10% ?

You gotta pick your battles. Part of being in a startup is to be comfortable with quick and dirty when necessary. It’s when things get bigger, too corporate and slow that companies stop moving fast.

We are talking about Netflix. You know, the 'N' in FAANG/MAANG or whatever.

While jobs maybe not require someone been physically present. So far over the last 2 years seeing multiple businesses do return to office, productivity sky rocketed. Sure a few people who didn’t want to return to the office left, but turns out they weren’t that productive. People are easy to replace now.

What are these places? How is productivity being measured?

All this talk of data and I have yet to see _anything_.

I wish people wouldn't spread this nonsense. Public companies can care about whatever they want until their shareholders sack the CEO, which is an extremely high bar. It seems extremely improbable to me that there would be a shareholder revolt over "hi, we'll be increasing COG by a tiny amount to improve quality of the METAL BIRDS PEOPLE PAY TO BE PUT IN".

your blithe blackpilled acceptance of sociopathy is wrong and unhelpful.

Sl1mb0 · a year ago
Alright guy, I'll bite. Why do _you_ think that Boeing off-loaded manufacturing burden to 3rd party companies? Their executives have effectively gutted the company over the last 20 years. Now we're left with a bailed-out husk the government literally _cannot_ afford to let go out of business.

Crimea, anyone?

> Do you think the same thing about art or architecture? Literature? Films?

I don't watch movies and only occasionally read books. Nothing depressing about it whatsoever. In fact, I find your reasoning much more reductive. Imagine reducing life to such mundane things when it has so much more to offer.

Sl1mb0 · a year ago
What more does life have to offer then?

I have a little brother. And while I would say we are close, I always wonder how he feels about me. I was not nice to him growing up, and it created a lot of resentment. One day I apologized to him about it, and I remember him seeing tear up out of the corner of my eye.

The day that I think changed our relationship we went on a hike together. While we were driving there he had a bunch of anxiety about it, and wanted to back out. I managed to convince him to come with me and just let all his feelings out; he just yelled at me the entire drive there about a lot of different things. Including my treatment of him.

That hike to this day was the best I've ever been on. Everybody has a different relationship with their brother, but I genuinely do not and cannot imagine this existence without mine. He understands me in ways that nobody else does. He gets my jokes that nobody else does. Having a brother you are close with just _almost_ proves you don't die alone.

If someone builds a feature faster, better, and more open than the paid alternative and gives it away long before the enterprise version even announces the feature, where is the entitlement?
Sl1mb0 · a year ago
The expectation that the feature should be merged in.

Just because you created an amazing pull request that everyone wants merged in, doesn't mean the maintainer should or want to do so.

Or they received a classified briefing showing how far ahead China or other adversaries are in terms of AI for military use and felt obligated to not let the US fall further behind.

Why is this being downvoted? This is totally possible, though I'm not saying it happened.

Is it because it's speculative?
