Readywater commented on Ask HN: Does SpaceX have a chance at making life multiplanetary?    · Posted by u/quickaskq

Yeah, there are faint mentions of moon colonization from Musk, but more often than not he talks about Mars.

I do agree more and more that Musk is a grifter (look no further than Twitter), but SpaceX seems to be one of his ventures that’s not a grift. The technology actually works (falcon 9 works, dragon works, Starlink works), and I don’t see what kind of financial gain he has in going to Mars. Possibly hoping the government subsidizes his Starship rockets that he then will use for contracts?

I also wonder how much he has personally changed over the past few years and whether that’s affected his vision for it: like it started as a deeply held conviction but simply drifted with his celebrity and more temporal concerns? I mean, even if he went off the deepend tomorrow and went full toxic internet guy (instead of partial), those core companies he’s created are seemingly a net good human process wise.

Also sad that Shopify isn't all that good. Their scale enables them to have a community with helpful guides and videos and stuff, but the actual product is arguably less sophisticated than what competitors offer. What they have is a zinger of a name and a big marketing budget. Anyone in this space should really check out alternatives. Unless there is a specific plug in or use case you want to use there is not much good reason to choose Shopify.

What are some of the alternatives you’d recommend?

I love the idea of these, but why one device vs usb-c mechanical keyboard + tablet. That combo of Plank keyboard + iPad Pro has proven absolutely killer for me as a portable and highly flexible work studio (design, write, Jupyter, and ssh-Ing).

Maybe somebody will put together a group buy.

Tobii is pretty intense about this stuff, esp re licensing. Their gaming stuff can’t be used for research, for example. It’s a similar vibe to eInk.

I would kill for language options on this. Having been studying Arabic while living in Northern Europe, none of the streaming services have Arabic dubbed shows. The only thing I’ve found is the expanse, which itself is in a different dialect than what I’m studying. Being able to easily search by language availability and subtitle availability would be wonderful.

Brutal. I don’t want to think about how much I’ve spent through Wolt (CPH) during the pandemic, but from a customer experience standpoint, they have been very fair. Quick response, predictable outcomes, no hoops. Congrats to wolt, thanks to all the delivery and service workers, and I’ll delete it at the first change in CS standards.

Readywater commented on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?    · Posted by u/DamnInteresting

After years of crappy chairs, I finally invested in a Herman Miller Aeron at the start of lockdown.

Due to lockdown restrictions I took a risk and ordered one without trying it first (knowing I had the return policy to fall back on).

I was immediately disappointed with the comfort when it first arrived, and almost sent it back. But I stuck with it for a few more days and found that once I'd adjusted to the chair, I now find it the most comfortable thing I've ever sat in. I've since read that it's quite common to take a few days to adjust to a chair like this, where the ergonomics are very different (better) than cheaper chairs.

I used to get various aches and pains after sitting in my cheap office chairs for a few hours (even with breaks in between), now I find that there is almost no upper limit for how long I can comfortably work in this chair.

So yes it's f*king expensive, but I do highly recommend it. A year on, I think it was a very good investment.

BTW I highly recommend the Atlas Headrest for the Aeron - it looks 100% like a genuine original part and it really makes a big different to comfort (in my opinion). The only downside is the headrest alone costs about the same as what I used to spend on "upper-range" office chairs from Staples.

Readywater · 5 years ago
Strong second on the atlas headrest. It feels like the missing piece for the aeron as a chair that can do everything — focused work, lounging back to read, etc. I bought my aeron right at the start of the pandemics (as well as a split keyboard, vertical mouse) and honestly, not sure I can go back. Some consistent wrist and forearm pains have completely gone away.
