Pikamander2 commented on Kids Rarely Read Whole Books Anymore. Even in English Class   nytimes.com/2025/12/12/us... · Posted by u/signa11

All of the literature we recommend in school is outdated, so it makes sense to me that kids would not want to read them.

More school districts should experiment with contemporary novels that make sense in a modern context.

I agree wholeheartedly with this.

While "the classics" may have some educational and cultural value, many of them came off as dry and pretentious.

There are countless anecdotes online of people who loved to read books as a kid but thoroughly hated reading by the end of high school or college, which is a terrible outcome.

I think that English classes in general are far too prescriptive and narrow in what they assign students to read, particularly when it comes to fiction. They seem to adopt the attitude of "These books are well-written classics. You have to read them, and if you don't enjoy them then there's something wrong with you."

Forcing students to read specific boring material might make sense in other classes like History or Science where there are very specific facts that they need to remember, but the required reading portion of English classes doesn't need to be handled in such a rigid way.

I suspect that we would end up with far better results if we gave students a curated list of popular books and had them pick out their favorites to read rather than just telling them to go read Ethan Frome and write an essay on loneliness afterwards.

I live in Minnesota and do not own a snowblower. Probably my mistake, but I always joke that I get most of my exercise in the winter. Snow is really heavy for those without context.

A couple years ago we had a particularly bad snowfall. The plow has a nasty hate filled habit of dumping all its snow in my driveway. I had a drift at the end of my driveway about 4 feet high and 6 feet deep. Literally up to my chest. I had spent a solid hour just chipping away at it trying to get my car out and had made very little progress.

Right as I was about to give up in frustration, a man in a bobcat drove by. Moments later he turned around, came back, and asked "would you like me to clear that for you?" I told him that would be amazing. Took him a couple minutes and then he waved and drove off before I got a chance to offer him any money or even thank him.

I think about this guy pretty often, it's absolutely the random act of kindness in my life I have appreciated most.

A recent lesser snowfall for context:

Plot twist: He just wanted an excuse to try out his new snowblower.

The YouTube equivalent is SponsorBlock:

And the smart fridge equivalent is either PiHole, or.. not buying a smart fridge.

Can’t wait for the Flock Equifax/SouthParkWereSorry-esque breach announcement any day. I should start a betting pool w my friends.

No worries; after Flock gets breached, you'll be compensated with one free year of their services.

Yeah, there's been a lot of talk about it for years.

What's especially sad is that some major progress was made toward having a free official system just a few years ago, but now it's being torn apart.

Problem with <output> is that it is half-baked making its usage almost useless.

It would be significantly more practical for the output to have "type" attribute in the same way as in the input.

I did experiment with oputput|type in my Sciter and added these:

type="text" - default value, no formating
type="number" - formats content as a number using users locale settings,
type="currency" - formats content as a currency using users locale settings,
type="date" - as a date, no TZ conversion,
type="date-local" - as a date in users format, UTC datetime to local,
   type="time" - as a time
type="time-local" - as a local time, value treated as UTC datetime.
This way server can provide data without need to know users locale.

> half-baked making its usage almost useless.

It's sad how many elements this is still the case for in 2025. A good chunk of them can be blamed on Safari.

Probably the most extreme example of this is <input type="date"> which is supposedly production-ready but still has so many browser quirks that it's almost always better to use a JS date picker, which feels icky.

> Multiple overlapping speakers are represented on the top and bottom of the screen.

> This level of attention to detail makes for a better viewing experience

Quality concerns aside, I've always disliked having text on the top and bottom of the screen simultaneously. My eyes are focused on the bottom of the screen, so I sometimes don't even realize that there's text at the top and have to pause/rewind to figure out what I missed.

I think putting both speakers' captions at the bottom with some kind of differentiator makes more sense.

They're for sure doing this and have been caught: https://x.com/d0nut2x/status/1940107015533285646

Looks like they blamed it on a third-party vendor.

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1lqzdva/crunchyroll_...

They probably went with a "lowest bidder" approach and then didn't sufficiently check the quality of work being submitted.
