>What makes it extremely strong or privileged?

The fact that his parents were math and literature professors who entertained him dropping out of school to write poetry. If I had done that my parents would have offered me exactly three choices, get a job, go back to school, or pack your bags and pay your own rent which would have forced me to get a job, understandably so because as working class people they didn't have the resources to sponsor me for another decade while I go soul searching

What does your definition of privilege mean? Bemoaning parents who supported their children in the combination of the parents interests does not seem like an egregious sin.

I've been super interested in sailing since moving to San Francisco and running around the marinas/Embarcadero.

Did some digging and found a sailing school that I haven't asked about classes (yet) https://www.spinnaker-sailing.com

There's even a school that offers boatbuilding lessons in Sausalito -- a bit too far/much of a time commitment for me! https://www.spauldingcenter.org/current-offerings

Other people have echoed the same advice, I’ll add to it.

Take enough of a learn to sail class that you understand the basic theory —- I took one at my local yacht club.

Then, find a racing fleet! Racing boats need crew weight to help the boat sail towards the wind (so you can be useful while you are still learning), and not all the jobs require as much sailing knowledge as others (my first job was to pull the free end of the line while someone was winching in the sail).

Skippers value consistency —- the boat can’t race without a crew, so literally just reliably showing up is a valuable thing.

That sounds like so much fun. How much of a demand does it place on you physically, ie how fit do you need to be to do it well?
OldManAndTheCpp · a year ago
Counterintuitively, the bigger the boat the less the fitness requirement.

Small boats (dinghies) require crew weight in certain places (“hiking” as far out to windward as possible) and have less mechanical advantage in the boat systems.

Larger boats, the forces scale out of the human range quickly and the crew relies on winches and pulleys to move the sails.

I know nothing about sailing. I've been on a few sailboats. I love the idea of wind power - probably why I like flying remote control sailplanes.

I would love to volunteer on someone's race/sail boat to get some experience. I'm happy to take the ASA introductory course or ? course.

Any advice on how to move forward? I'm in the Seattle area.

I own (half of) a racing boat on the Great Lakes.

Buying a boat brings with it dreams of freedom, winning races, beautiful summer days.

The reality is that you need crew! Serious racers will refer to their boat as their “program”, and are always looking for careful, reliable crew.

I’d say look for a “learn to sail” program at whatever yacht club is nearest you, then see if they have a club racing scene. Most clubs have both.

AKA "the blacks".

Ironically, you are positing the same concerns as the people you claim are "entitled" but instead of questioning the university's policies you want to give them more power to enforce racial segregation.

OldManAndTheCpp · a year ago
No, the anti-social elements. It is wrong to paint an entire racial group as anti-social, as you are doing.

Perhaps this could be solved by having the planes run at ground level, using some sort of guideway, and using either the guideway itself or overhead wires to transmit the power by direct contact?

There's still Garmin... but honestly, I don't understand why people insist on paying hundreds of dollars for a "name", when the watch you are describing is only worth $50, give or take.

Amazfit, Xiamoni, Pautios, etc. There's a flood of competitors on Amazon selling the functionality you describe at a price level that makes it non-worthwhile for the "name" brands. That's why those famous brands exit the space.

There are two leagues of "smart" watches. At the high-end, "cell phone on your wrist" tier, there's Apple and just enough smaller players to keep Apple somewhat honest. It's really more fashion accessory than practical device.

At the basic "pedometer, Bluetooth notifications from my phone, and week-long battery" tier, there are tons of options. But margins are razor thin, so the cool names don't play in that space. Down here you're talking about a purely utilitarian device rather than a fashion accessory.

The Apple Watch has best in class health sensors + fitness monitoring. Cycle tracking, blood O2 sensing, ecg function are all truly valuable.

I bought a watch for myself, my parents and my girlfriend. The prompting and social aspects of the “close your rings” exercise tracking have already led to a ~10 bpm decrease in my girlfriend’s resting heart rate, suggesting a marked improvement in her cardiovascular health.

Personally, I find the Apple Watch somewhat ugly, but the fitness features are worth the sartorial limitations!

This seems incoherent to me? Metal stamping is a process, and die casting is a separate process, from what I understand. Is there any reason to die cast a chassis? Does the press strength around the casting molds matter? I’d assume chassis parts would be built out of stamped and bent sheet metal?

> I had perfect dental health all my life and needed multiple fillings after 18 months of soda.

Not an expert, but I'm not sure if that makes sense? As I understand it, soda causes dental problems because bacteria in your mouth eat sugar, creating an acidic environment that erodes the enamel on your teeth, making it possible for cavities to form. Since Coke Zero doesn't contain sugar, I don't see why it would be a problem.

I wonder if you normally had regular 6 month or 12 month dental checkups, where they would clean built-up tartar off your teeth, and these were put on hold during the pandemic?

OldManAndTheCpp · 2 years ago
Sodas also have acid in them directly, the first 3 ingredients in Coke Zero are: > CARBONATED WATER, CARAMEL COLOR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, …

A bank run powered by memes.

We truly live in a world.

OldManAndTheCpp · 3 years ago
Bank runs are always caused by memes -- the change is bank runs powered by image macros, but memetic spread of the idea "this bank may fail" is always what causes a run.
