"Fab" seems a bit of an overstatement. What he is describing is similar in capabilities to what any average university lab with a device fabrication facility is capable of.

And they also have a wonderful mobile weather app, also called "yr"!

Which, at least for the Oslo area, offers more reliable predictions than Apple's weather app (which is always weather.com, afaik) Having said that, and having the Norwegian Meteorological Institute down the road from where I live, their local predictions are often completely off on rain, to the point I always bring a raincoat when going out.

USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness

It was recently discussed on HN https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30911598

One interesting takeaway for me was that there are actually some quite cheap hubs available from AliExpress and the "branded" ones are essentially the same with a logo printed on (and hopefully some additional QA).

Can confirm, but not sure about better QA of the branded ones. Company issued macbook came with a "Satechi" hub, which died within 6 months, while two other noname AliExpress ones have worked with no issue for 2 years now
Nanite commented on Everything with a battery should have an off switch   twitter.com/Foone/status/... · Posted by u/danso

Examples lying around in my house:

Bathroom scale: lovely it powers up when you tap it, but eats up 2 button cells a year for a few dozen uses a year

Kitchen scales, bit more use, at least once a day but again 2 button cells a year

electronic caliper: Same, eats up 1 button cell a year, just sitting in my toolbox

Strangely enough none of our kids toys with batteries seem to suffer from this problem

How much extra cost does a hard on/off switch add to the bill of materials?

It feel like it's getting more and more common. There is so much cheap no-name hardware imported where they just slap on FCC and CE logos.

My bet is that it's a cheap power supply, they are the worst offenders.

The “China Export” logo is a blatant but subtle imitation of the actual CE logo. Quite frankly insidious...

Assuming I have no idea about these things, which is true—I don’t—how much is a decent CO2 sensor that can be connected to a Pi or similar setup?

I recently upgraded to double glazed windows in half the house, including all the bedrooms, and put a heat pump in each of the two used bedrooms. So I want to keep the windows closed for heat retention, but also want to keep them slightly open to reduce CO2 build up.

I sleep in my small bedroom with my two 16kg dogs, so it seems reason the CO2 level may rise to suboptimal during the night if the window is shut.

What I would like to do is make a DIY ventilation system that can move fresh, HEPA filtered, air from outside, in to the room.

Or am I over complicating things? Could I just use a small fan, something sized to replace, say, half the volume of the room every few hours, and just leave it constantly on? Or should I put a larger fan on a timer so it runs for a few minutes every hour?

Does any of this really matter?

Edit to add: any good resources to lose myself down a rabbit hole?

Search for : NDIR CO2 sensor module. The ones without auto-calibration go for under $20 in China.

Initial indicators seem to be that they're not ready for prime time.

Albuquerque returned BYD buses because of problems with range not performing as advertised. https://www.abqjournal.com/1246094/abq-rejecting-all-byd-art...

Battery-electrics still have major issues with range; buses cannot last a full day on a single charge, and midday charging takes too long. And if it gets cold or the route has hills, you're completely out of luck. https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2019/01/electric-bus-...

Evidence to the contrary:

http://www.vdlbuscoach.com/News/News-Library/2018/Europa-s-g...

I use these on a regular basis, for urban environments, electric busses combined with overhead superchargers at the end-of-line terminals work really well.
