LucasOe commented on I built an open source AI tool to find my autoimmune disease   old.reddit.com/r/selfhost... · Posted by u/makehistory

To everyone here being dismissive of AI: you have no idea how it feels like to know you have something wrong, but receiving nothing but shrugs from the experts that are supposed to help you. I have experienced the very same thing: an orthopedist looked at my joint and wrist pain, the endocrinologist checked hormones, the rheumatologist ran their own tests. If I had to rely on my primary doctor to help, I would be taking ibuprofen and some other anti-inflammatory of their favorite big pharma.

I did a large amount of tests, including RSI and carpal tunnel, chasing what could be the source of my issue. I was only able to find out that I have Ankylosing spondylitis by talking to other people online, and asking my primary care doctor to test me specifically for the HLA-B27 antigen. I was just lucky to receive help from a random person on the internet: "why don't you check for X".

I imagine all the other people out there that were not lucky as me, or did not have access to that information. If AI can help with this, then it is great.

What a coincidence! At the end of last year, I had uveitis for the second time, and my eye doctor advised me to investigate whether I have an autoimmune disorder. Two weeks ago, I underwent a blood test, but all my values came back normal. It was only after researching the HLA-B27 antigen online and discussing it with my doctor that I was able to persuade him to test me for it. Initially, he was reluctant, as he saw no reason to do so. Now, I have another blood test scheduled in three months, where I will finally find out if I have it.

> How would you feel about, multiple times a day, being required to defend your core beliefs that you find trivially true?

Do you have to defend, or can you just ignore. I assume those statements are still being made, even if you don’t read them. So why not just ignore and move on?

FWIW, Twitter (not saying Twitter is the best or only site) allows you to have a feed of only people you follow. That probably approximates going to another site of only people who share your core beliefs.

That's the reason why people are moving to Bluesky: because there you don't have a make a constant effort to ignore posts.

On Twitter, I have a make an active effort to not click on the "For you" tab because I'll be bombarded with posts about Trump or "woke" games, which I simply don't want to see. On Bluesky, I can actually discover new content without having to think about my mental health when using the "Discover" feed.

Using Windows for development feels like using Linux for anything but server-side work or Macos for gaming, it'll probably work if you have light requirements and don't use the shell that often, but when I think about the last time I tried it, it almost makes me feel fine paying $500 for a ram upgrade on my next mac

If you want bash like syntax, you can always run msys2 / Cygwin / WSL on Windows. But 99% of the time I just need to run basic commands like git and maybe pipe them to ripgrep or fzf, and frankly the PowerShell is fine for that. For anything more complicated, I'll write a script in Python or maybe JavaScript anyway, so I don't really care what shell I use as long as I can customize it and it can run basic commands. And if you don't like PowerShell, there's Nushell.

I like Kants work, but it has always bugged me, how he defined the 12 Kantian categories of a priori knowledge that just are. It feels inelegant. I'd much rather have a generalisation of all a priori knowledge instead of a defined list.

I always struggle with keeping my writing clear and concise, maybe because English isn't my native tongue, so this looks like an incredibly helpful tool to me. Does Vale.sh have the ability to check the prose used in comments? Using this for doc comments would be useful for writing better documentation. The example only shows it being used for markdown files.

I don't think this is the reason you learn calculus in school, but I do think it is a good reason to learn it.
