Plastic straws are better, as are incandescent light bulbs.

The proof is in the pudding / free market. If the alternatives (paper straws, LED bulbs) were better, people would voluntarily buy them! (cf: mobile phones vs. stationary phones, almost noone has the latter these days, because the former are just - better!) Instead, they're banned because they're better.

Dumping toxic waste into a river would also lower costs for consumers vs disposing of it correctly, but there are regulations to prevent that. Complete unobstructed free market capitalism is not sustainable, there needs to be a balance.

> Running a Linux VM on Windows is nicer than just booting into Linux

Indeed, it does. Having stable system and not dealing with Linux on Desktop, clear tradoffs (like "just add another 16gb RAM stick in laptop/desktop and you are golden") is great for peace of mind.

The average uptimes on my laptops (note for plural) is ~3 weeks, until next Windows Update to be applied. I don't have nostalgia on the days of using Linux on desktop (~2003 student times, ~2008 giving it one more try, ~2015 as required by dayjob)

Of course it adds up that I can tell people around me (who are not tech guys often, but smart enough to know basic concepts and be able to run bash scripts provided to them) - "yep, machine with 32GB+ of RAM will work fine, choose any you like" - and it works.

This is the opposite of what I've heard. Most often you hear of people installing Linux on old machines due to it performing better than Windows on low resources.

I can sympathize, but you didn’t mention the benefits at all, what would they be? What is benefit of anxiously thinking about past decisions?
Loocid · 4 months ago
I understood it not as past decisions, but facing current decisions they need to make but often procrastinate on by looking at their phone.

Honestly, that didn't help. There's a wide type of "controversy" there, and I don't see how 4chan are inherent to any of them, they could've been done via any forum. Or maybe I missed something, specificity would be good.
Loocid · 5 months ago
But they weren't done via any forum, they were done via 4chan. The community makes a forum.

Unbelievable how anti-pg hn has gotten. I don't think what pg is saying is anything new, he's always had the same sentiment around anti-censorship, anti-authoritarian/mob and pro-breaking-the-rules attitude.

It's called "hacker" news for a reason.

Loocid · 8 months ago
He claims to be anti-censorship, yet he can't see Twitter is just as censored as it used to be because it aligns with his world view now. The same as the Left used to be blind to Right censorship. Maybe he should try tweeting "cis".

"pro-breaking-the-rules attitude" come on. He's aligning himself with the most conservative and powerful people in the world right now. How is that a rule breaking attitude?

This is overly defensive. They never said that Unity was the only engine that exposes intermediate code, just that it was an attack vector because the game was built with Unity. It's a perfectly valid thing to point out. You didn't come to the defence of Lua just because they decompiled some Lua scripts.

VS code compared to studio for dotnet dev is comparing a tractor to a trike.
Loocid · 10 months ago
I agree, but the comment you are replying to was asking for the differences between VSCode and Rider. "It runs on Linux" is not one of those.
