There are other sinks for cheap electricity in an industrial economy. Aluminum is a common one, as the main extraction is an electrochemical process. Canada is the 4th largest producer and Iceland (!) 11th.

Competitive and relevant Aluminum smelting requires massive economies of scale, an initial capital outlay, and a supply chain. A competitive smelter might require a billion dollars and a few years to build. And you have to negotiate a regular stream of bauxite ore, materials, etc. It's not an easy or quick arbitrage.

why should eddie van halen be discussed and memorialized here when kobe bryant’s death was relentlessly flagged and censored from discussion?
Lol_80005 · 5 years ago
Nerds don't like sportball, but programming nerds like abstract creators. Eddie was a mind bending genere pushing creative force. His impact was bigger than sportball. Often other obituaries are noted here. Sportsball not so much, unless it's statistical sportsball. Van Halen is probably a stretch tbh, so I don't want to defend it too much either. This site is still better than twitter.

Fun fact: we still can’t genetically transform human mitochondria, and we’ve tried for decades
Lol_80005 · 5 years ago
We can make IVF progeny with a separate mitochondrial parent, been doing that about a decade. We move ones we like between cells.

Hiking pants have these. I have a couple and it's great. They are usually zippered also. I think you don't see this on dress pants because "fashion".

Milton Glaser is probably the most well known graphic designer in history because of his I (Heart) NY work, but he has so many outstanding pieces of graphic design work.

It always amazes me how incredibly timeless are his logos. You could launch any brand with that logo tomorrow and it wouldn’t look out of place.

He also did some great satirical pieces.

https://www.miltonglaser.com/the-work/ I like the gallery posted on his website. His work was really high profile.

As a contrast, and since you've mentioned Bad Pharma, I suggest reading also "Good Pharma" (https://www.amazon.com/Good-Pharma-Public-Health-Model-Insti...).

Disclaimer: the book mentions the institute where I'm currently employed, although the views and opinions I'm expressing are my own.

As a contrast, and since you've mentioned Good Pharma, I suggest reading also "Bottle of Lies: The Inside Story of the Generic Drug Boom" ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062338781/ )

This book discusses the supply line of generic drugs on US shelves today.

Honestly, my understanding is prison are supposed to be a deterrent for the free, and a rehabilitation for the imprisoned.

Most prison terms are not 40-60 year virtual life sentences, so most people who go to prison will see the outside again. So while I dont think we should 'take it easy' on prisoners we really shouldn't be trying to do damage that will prevent them from having a chance to function in society.

Besides all that fundamental as a society either the society believes in human rights or it doesnt...

In the US, specifically Georgia, the justice system is almost strictly punative with little to no provision for rehabilitation. Should you get stuck in it, it is designed to punish you to the maximum normal sentence, not to help you in any way. As far as I can tell, it's not designed as a rehabilitation for the imprisioned. Probation and parole similarly act with punative means only. In practice, the probation officers are not your friends and they are not there to help you.
