Or instead of coming up with our own lists, just look at what other countries are doing?

The UK is doing OK with the NHS at half the US cost as a fraction of GDP. Singapore is doing at least as good at about a quarter of the costs.

American combines the worst of government and private healthcare. The UK does a decent job with government healthcare. And Singapore combines the best of government and private healthcare.

The Republicans never brought forward any proposals for improvement but voted 40 times or so for repealing Obamacare. I don't think they have any plans other than letting the market fix itself and if you can't afford healthcare you just have to do without.

In reality, American healthcare is just a big scam and ripoff. On my last trip to Germany my girlfriend had a problem with her eye. We went to an eye doctor there and paid 25 Euro out of pocket without insurance. Doctors in Germany don't starve but they have nice cars and houses. In the US she had recently several surgeries and every hospital bill has had massive errors in the range of thousands of dollars. It's just a racket. How about enforcing some standards of billing accuracy instead of allowing this kind of scam?

All prospective FBI special agents and intelligence analysts also have to go through a polygraph exam as part of the hiring process.

I thought polygraphs were so well discredited by now that no-one used them; is the FBI still screening with them? What sort of questions are they asking and disqualifying you on?
Kopion · 9 years ago
They are largely discredited, especially for pre-employment screenings. The polygraph exam is the last phase in the Special Agent hiring process, which can take up to a couple of years to complete. Several federal agencies still use it. I can't discuss what is asked, but you can walk out of the exam and know whether or not you told the truth - there is no ambiguity about the answers you give. That is why I am 100% certain it was a false positive.

I applied to the FBI, made it all the way through the hiring process and then failed the polygraph portion. It was 100% a false positive... Maybe they should look at utilizing a method other than the polygraph for assessing deception.

I got my education in audio engineering at a leading music conservatory, so moving into audiobook editing was a pretty easy sell for me.

An audiobook is made in four basic steps:

1. A voice actor records the narration for the book.

2. The editor takes the raw audio recordings and edits these files for pacing, flow, and aesthetic flavor. The editor also makes note of any errors in the narration which require a re-record.

3. After making all re-records and inserting the new audio, the audio is listened through one more time. They call this a "QC pass."

4. Finally, the QC'd audio is mastered and encoded for delivery.

I was the owner of step two for all Audible Studios productions.

If you don't mind me asking, how were you compensated for this? What was the model?

I don't work at Amazon, but I have caught on to what, to me, seems to be an unsettling concept. This may or may not be new, but the concept I am getting it is often referred to as "internal equity" - considering what salaries are already in place for similar positions.

This appears to be one of many variables HR uses for salary negotiations and I recognize that. I don't see why this necessarily matters for most work places. Shouldn't you just pay for what the candidate brings to the table (skills, experience, etc.) and not consider what, even someone with a similar background is currently making in the company. I suppose salary negotiations/the labor market isn't an efficient market where a price can be assigned given x, y, & z.

I worked for Amazon (Audible.com) from 2011 to 2014.

1 - Full-time freelance audiobook editor.

$30/hr

2 - Post-Production Associate - Level 6/4

$50,000/yr

35 shares of AMZN per year for three years

3 - ACX Production Coordinator - Level 7/5

$65,000/yr

Additional 20 shares of AMZN per year for three years

I am no longer ashamed to write these figures out to the public because I now make more than twice the salary that I was making before I left the company. I found that my salary at Amazon was always far too low given what I did, and my job titles were not at all representative of the job I actually did (for the 2nd and 3rd jobs they were almost entirely software engineering jobs.)

NOTE: Audible and Amazon have different job levels - Audible's job levels are two points higher than the same Amazon job level.

Full-time freelance audiobook editor? I didn't realize that was a position. What exactly does this entail and how did you get started with it?
