I’d be comfortable doing anything I did in December 2019 today. People face wildly heterogeneous risks from this virus and should be allowed to respond accordingly. I’m young, healthy, and haven’t ever visited a nursing home (where 80% of the deaths in my state are) since 2002 when I was six years old. So my response to corona is basically “oh well”. Other people will be in different situations and should make decisions for themselves accordingly. But a one size fits all policy for a virus which varies 1000-fold in severity is nuts.

The problem here is the more the virus spreads the more everyone is put at risk.
KnightOfWords commented on Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures to the entire country   bbc.com/news/world-europe... · Posted by u/colinprince

Well,

The only thing that be called reasonable statistic is the number of deaths and that hasn't spiked - I hate to say - yet. It's possible hospitals are even missing those, it's a big country. And it's a dispersed country so things might not spread as quickly.

But other, what you say. Stopping large public events and doing mass testing seems crucial. South Korea seems to have gotten a handle on their infection process at the moment things are out-of-hand in Italy. South Korea has done mass testing for a while.

It takes 6-41 days for covid-19 to kill, with 14 days being the median. The death rate is going to lag behind the cases of infection by a few days.

Mind providing some non-biased links? Every controversial book has been somehow "debunked" all the time... :)

Here's a pretty good summary:

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/1997/01/the-bell-curve-f...

A few things to bear in mind, race is far more of a cultural construct than a genetic one. Compared to other species we don't show much genetic variation, and people of African descent are much more genetically diverse than the rest of humanity. Another is that IQs have been rising steadily around the world, proof that environmental factors such as nutrition and education have a a large effect.

The Bell Curve has been thoroughly debunked I believe. Genetics aren't nearly as important as environment for IQ scores, as proven by adopted children.

clickbait title. Proposed new title:

"Coronavirus: British government makes contingency plan in case one fifth of UK workers 'off sick at same time' "

KnightOfWords · 6 years ago
I took the BBC website title and added the word 'could' to make it clearer. Since then they've changed the title a couple times.

How is this worse than your normal influenza cycle with 3-5Mio infections and 290k-650k death to warrant such an emergency?
KnightOfWords · 6 years ago
Because it has a higher lethal rate than Influenza and it has the potential to evolve and become much more infectious than it is currently.

I think we can discount the article based on the unironic use of the word soldiers to describe colleagues.
KnightOfWords · 6 years ago
I think we can discount it based on its content, written by the kind of manager who should be avoided like the plague.
