Ghoyome commented on Show HN: Generate commit messages using GPT-3   github.com/markuswt/gpt-c... · Posted by u/markuswt

This creates precisely the kind of commit messages that I regularly scold junior developers for :)"

In my opinion, commit messages should clarify the intent of WHY you changed things. I can already see WHAT you changed from the diffs.

But of course, any tool can only work with the what, they cannot know that these lines are related to a bug report filed in a technically unrelated system.

I just had a realization. Usually in my private repos I do “what;why” so I can go back to commits when I brake stuff. But I should be using branches for what and commits for why…

Honestly this feels like "programmer circle jerk" material.

I love Japanese. I love it so much that I (accidentally?) moved to Japan.

But it really has nothing to do with programming. It's a natural langauge with all the idiosyncrasies of natural languages. In fact I'd say that English in comparison feels like a man-made language purpose built for math and technology.

My suspicion is it is a bias to one’s mother tongue. I feel the same way about Arabic. English feels “lawless” and “undeconstructable” in some cases, no equation for “creating” words that works every time. In this sense Arabic is way more “Mathematical “ to me although all the number theory, graph theory, discrete math etc. books I’ve read are written in English.

A workflow like this:

RTM -> SO question (not found) -> IRC/Discord -> post question on SO.

As opposed to this:

LLM -> RTM -> SO (maybe post a question)

Simply has SO earlier in the pipeline. The later does not render it obsolete (yet?) from what I can tell.

If a simple annotation to how the LLM got the answer is deployed I think that is where SO will be visited only to ask questions rather than find an answer (still not obsolete).

P.S. this is speculative at best at this stage. SO can be rendered obsolete by some hidden side effect of LLMs/search engines

I do something similar, and in my case it is apparently a result of ADHD/ASD, but that's not why I'm here. I installed the OneTab browser plugin fairly recently because I tended to keep open "too many" tabs across multiple devices for various reasons. And I'd use it, and all my tabs are "closed and bookmarked and filed away", and then a short while later I've got dozens of tabs open again. In most cases, I've actually read these and I'm expecting to continue using the content in some manner.

So, anyway, counting what's open right now and what I've filed away, I'm at nearly 700 tabs. Some of them will be reused but the vast majority of essentially junk food for the brain.

That doesn't include the untracked but presumably insane number of things I actually did read but didn't keep open in a tab or file for later (just as it ignores the several hundred unread books on my Kindle while not counting the vast number of digital and physical books I do read).

I could handwave and spout unfounded theories about dopamine or "conditions" or anything you like, but ultimately, after decades of this, in my case it's what happens when my focus is on consuming rather than producing (ex: when I'm not engaged in something like a zettelkasten process), while allowing my insatiable curiosity and love of learning to remain undirected.

In short, you've got to manage that stuff. Or, at least, I do,

Windows > Tabs every single time. What helped me most was a good window manager:

• A single floating window acting as an opener*

• windows are always arranged in the case of tiling wms.

• In the case of Firefox user.css can help u remove the tab bar entirely. And opening in windows rather than tabs can be configured.

• I built my own window fuzzy searcher for finding windows.

The effect is compulsory need to close windows asap but keep a couple of windows forever that are actually for doing work. In my case :

• newsboat > firefox. • Cmus > firefox. • Aerc > firefox. • Irssi > firefox.

The list goes on and on.

The benefit is this: every job has it’s own window.

Note that still it is 100% the case that when not in “production/building” mode the default is consuming. This setup merely helps heighten awareness to the fact.

Hope it helps!

Oddly reminds me of Emily Dickinson:

  I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
  Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
  How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
  To an admiring Bog!

Lego mind storms. The blue kit with lightning all over it. “Programming” the RCX was probably what got me hooked on computers. And oh those damn alien Lego pieces, I probably spent more time with these thing than with almost all my siblings combined for the next 3 years.
