DeWilde commented on In Maine, prisoners are thriving in remote jobs   mainepublic.org/2025-08-2... · Posted by u/voxadam

Money spent on a prison is unproductive for society, so it might as well have just disappeared as far as tax payers are concerned.

It's the same as paying someone to dig a hole, then paying someone to fill it back up. The money might as well have disappeared, as there's nothing to show for it (for the taxpayers that is - the hole digger is happy to have been paid)

Have you considered the impact to the society if people destructive to it are not incarcerated?

I can’t believe people are cheerleading this move

* Tigris is DOA - If because it would piss off the MSFT board but mostly because the SEC would arrest Sam assuming he’s an officer at MSFT. He could maybe be a passive investor, but that’s it

* People really think many Open Ai employees will give up their equity to get whatever mediocre stock grant their level at Microsoft has? And 1% raises, no bonus some years, and the board forced headcount reductions?

* Sam has even less power with the board, and the board in a 3 trillion dollar corporation would be even more risk averse than the OpenAI one

* there was a ton of fan fiction yesterday online about Satya forcing a move on the board. This was never really a thing. He made one of the worst investments in the history of SV in terms of keeping power to make sure your money is used correctly. $10B for 0 votes or any power to change votes

> no bonus some years,

What do you mean? MS employees are getting bonuses on a yearly basis, this year included.

I've been extremely happy with their generated voice!

I had GPT read something to me in the car. My wife was nonplussed with my "audiobook" until I told her that you can talk to it like Siri. Then she called it "scary" haha

Was this just ChatGPT or a custom implementation with access to some data?

If it's good for men's mental health, wouldn't it be good for women's mental health too? I just don't see how using a community workshop is related to gender.
DeWilde · 2 years ago
That is true, such spots should exist as well.

But the point of the men-only ones is to allow men to socialize with other men and talk about problems that affect them only or problems they don't feel comfortable talking about in a mixed setting.

I've always wondered why they need to be so sexist. Is it so terrible to have women around?

But not so long ago, I saw an article about women trying to open a similar shed but finding there was a funding program which was specifically only able to men's sheds. I'm surprised they can get away with it.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-21/huon-she-shed-project...

"While the local men's shed welcomes women, Ms Reardon said there were many women who wanted their own space."

It gets stranger and stranger.

Why would it be sexist to have men's only spaces for the purposes of men's mental health?

> Avoid sugar like the plague, [...]including to a lesser extent natural sugar (apples, bananas, pears, etc - we’ve “weaponized” these fruits in the last few hundred years via strong artificial selection into actual candy bars), berries are ~okay.

Is avoiding fruits a good recommendation?

DeWilde · 2 years ago
Depends what fruit and depends in what amount.

You can safely eat 200 grams of tomatoes as the sugar and calorie amount is pretty low but it will make you feel satiated.

Meanwhile 100 grams of banana will have 5 times the sugar and calories of tomatoes (for 100g) but still is pretty fine if you restrict yourself at that 1 small banana.

200 grams of an apple is also pretty safe and is a nice snack.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! It's your pal Mickey Mouse here, and I've got some news to share with all of you. Now, don't get too worried, but it looks like some of our Disney friends are going to be saying goodbye real soon.

That's right, as much as it pains us to say it, we've got to do what's best for our company and that means making some tough decisions. So, if you hear from your manager that you're part of the first round of layoffs, please know that we're thinking of you and wishing you all the best.

But don't you worry, because Disney is still going to be the most magical place on earth! We're going to keep bringing joy and happiness to all of our guests, and we know that our remaining cast members will continue to make dreams come true.

So, let's all stick together and keep that Disney spirit alive. We may be going through some changes, but we'll always be a family. Thanks for all you do, and keep on smiling!

Given how bad the Bing integration has gone, perhaps we should wait and see what the actual results are before we get too impressed.

I've been using it for code and product summaries and recommendations and it works fine.

With what uses did you find it lacking?

>Even packaged breads, including those high in nutritious whole grains, qualify as ultra-processed in many cases because of the additives and preservatives they contain.

However much I'd like to alter my diet to be more healthy, including flavored nuts or bread as ultraprocessed means I have nearly zero chance avoiding a sizable portion of what academic scientists label as ultraprocessed.

These studies and press releases seem counterproductive. If sliced bread or fancy nuts is in the same category as aerosol cheese or high calorie soda, a lot of people are going to struggle to understand what isn't ultraprocessed and give up trying to select better items at the grocery store.

DeWilde · 3 years ago
Making your own bread will have it qualify as non-ultra-processed. Now that might seem extreme for most folks or too cumbersome but today to avoid ultra-processed food or generally unhealthy food is pretty hard. And most people won't put in the effort no matter how well labeled it is.

To me it is more counterproductive not to label it as such, regardless that it may be highly nutritional, due to the fact that people like me who are not able to eat processed food and information like this is a literal life saver.
