Cytobit commented on U.S. senators introduce new pirate site blocking bill, "Block BEARD"   torrentfreak.com/u-s-sena... · Posted by u/HieronymusBosch

I've been trying to watch old 80s-90s movies recently. I'm happy to pay $5 or whatever, and they just aren't available anywhere. Rental stores are dead, so I can't go rent them from blockbuster or whatever, and streaming sites have splintered to the point I'm not even sure what is a scam and what is a legitimate business anymore. Trying to even find availability of what films exist on which streaming sites has been an absolute pain. There are theoretical catalogue sites, but they are all randomly out of date to the point that its not very useful.

I'm literally at the point where its looking like pirating the movies is the only way to watch them...

Pirates always pull this out as justification. Like they are starving people who are forced to steal bread just to survive. Maybe just because a piece of media has been published in the past, we don't all have some God-given right to access it in perpetuity for a nominal fee. Lost media is not a sin.

> Its a little bit of a stretch to call YouTube social media. There are tons of great instructional videos.

It’s clearly social media. It consists of user-generated content and has discussion features.

There’s a big problem with tech people coming up with their own definition of social media that exclusively includes sites they don’t use (TikTok, Facebook) but conveniently excludes sites they do like (YouTube, Discord, Hacker News). This makes them think extreme regulation and government intervention is a good thing because it will only impact the bad social media sites that they don’t want other people accessing. Then when the laws come out and they realize it impacts social media regardless of whether you like it or use it, they suddenly realize how bad of an idea it was to call for that regulation.

Redditors will swear up and down that they are not using social media. I don't know what they think social means.

Bluesky has telephone verification. That is often an disqualifier and common for tech affine people. Not that many other networks did not make the same mistake.

I am not sure if Bluesky can have long term success to be honest.

I made a Bluesky account without a phone number. Not sure what you're talking about.

For what it's worth, it may actually be healthier to not do these, particularly 1 and 3. You may be ruminating, and ruminating is not good for you - it can tire you, agitate you, cause you anxiety; also, you end up being in your thoughts and not in the moment (e.g. when hiking).

It is fine and good if you are doing it with purpose (e.g. tutoring someone else in your mind to understand something better, or trying to work out some problem that has a solution), but bad if you are trying to solve something unsolvable, dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, or just wasting your own CPU cycles.

This is something you can practice as part of mindfulness practice - getting spontaneous awareness that you are engaging in an unproductive internal dialogue and letting it go. Not fight it or stop it, but just let the thoughts come and go without engaging with them.

Is there a distinction between "letting it go" and "bottling it up"?
Cytobit commented on “Accentism” is real, but impossible to end   unherd.com/thepost/accent... · Posted by u/pseudolus

The proper British accent, incidentally, doesn't exist. This accent, Received Pronunciation, is an artificial creation. It was created fairly recently, too. It is used to designate social status. The only proper British accent is the multitude of variations that comes from different parts of Britain, and such accents originate from different ancient tribes.

Personally speaking, I prefer the colourful multitude of accents, rich in history and personality - in every country for that matter - rather than a dull, standardised, grey and 'proper' single accent to which people wish to conform so as to elevate themselves in others' esteem.

What makes an artificial accent less proper?

I'm guessing you're right, in the context, though, it's not the best shorthand to choose. The unrecognized perception that one's own accent is not actually an accent is the keystone of accentism.

Is there anything research to support that claim? Seems like it is just a regular tribal thing (us vs them, in-group vs out-group).

Cytobit commented on Have Fruits and Vegetables Become Less Nutritious? (2011)   scientificamerican.com/ar... · Posted by u/3131s

There's no scientific basis for my choice, but I have almost entirely stopped eating seasonal produce out of a season. I eat tomatoes in the summer and early autumn and then I patiently wait months to eat them again. When the winter comes I switch to vegetables that I haven't eaten at all or in limited amount for past half a year - beetroot, cabbage, carrot and more. I also eat all kinds of quality fermented, processed and dried stuff.

It made me fell in love with vegetables and fruits and whatever the season I just can't wait when the next starts. I also think this approach is more sustainable.

Cytobit · 5 years ago
Does anybody have a good suggestion for figuring out which produce is seasonal? Do you just buy stuff grown in/around your home country? It seems like I can usually buy any vegetable I want, regardless of the time of year, so I have no sense of when anything is in season.
