I think the anticipation of interruption caused by meetings might be worse, I end up losing a half hour on both ends.
Cerium · 5 days ago
Oh how I hate a last minute rescheduling of a meeting. Feeling like I only have 30 minutes, I didn't start anything deep. Such a waste.

Public funds are your money, but also the money of those who don't agree with you.

This is why I'm ok with the fact that the library has some books I like and agree with and many that I don't care about, and some I don't agree with.

I have found that adding things to a todo (Todist) list called "want-to-buy" gives me the little endorphin boost / anxiety relief without spending any money. I periodically go through and delete stuff from this list after time has passed, and I'm always glad I didn't go through with the purchases. Rarely I will come across something I truly do still want, and will purchase it.

Similarly, I have a "no same day buy" rule. Usually I wait at least a few days and most of the time by then I don't need the item anymore.

Would dates not enhance this art?
Cerium · 21 days ago
I think not. I enjoyed looking for details, for example how a backpack is clean in one photo and dirty in the other. Not knowing the details let's the viewer ponder and compair with more curiosity and intrigue. It sets a mystery.

How many times do we need to hear "exercise and healthy eating" prolong life and improve cognitive function?

Every time my wife brings up the skis collecting dust in our garage, I’m reminded of the S.K.I. model — Storage Kills Investment.
Cerium · 25 days ago
At least yours are in the garage. I have a friend who spent years storing a couple of hundred dollars of outdoor gear in a rental storage locker costing $50 per month.

All links render as blue strike-through line in Firefox (underline in Chrome), hurting legibility :(

I'm getting the same effect, seems to be the css property "text-underline-position: under;"

author was just making a joke here. Yes it's all the same water in the US although some towns in actually have greywater distribution systems, mostly for irrigation and fire hydrants.

Large new buildings in the Bay Area will use recycled water for toilets as well as irrigation. There are signs above every toilet telling you the water in the toilet is not fit for drinking.

At a social level we should know how to do this well because there are cases where it needs to be done well. Some hardware is operating in incredibly safety critical scenarios where you do want to have strong confidence that it's running the correct software[1].

Should this be shipped to consumers as a default? Fuck no. This technology needs to exist for safety, but that doesn't mean it should be used to prop up business models. Unfortunately there's no good technical mechanism to prevent technology being used in user-hostile ways, and we're left with social pressure. We should be organising around that social pressure rather than refusing to talk about the tech.

[1] and let's not even focus on the "Someone hacked it" situation - what if it accidentally shipped with an uncertified debug build? This seems implausible, but when Apple investigated the firmware they'd shipped on laptops they found that some machines had been pulled off the production line, had a debug build installed to validate something, and had then been put back on the production line without a legitimate build being installed - and if Apple can get this wrong, everyone can get this wrong

Great point, in general I find that the story for security is always hackers but the result is that far more commonly you hack yourself with manufacturing process variation.
