The elderly. Pets. Female-focused. These three areas tend to be underserved.

Underserved how? What software do they use that could be improved?

What is the difference between "Redot" and Godot?

The README for this GitHub contains the same info as the official Godot repo [1], so it's not clear what this fork does differently or changes.

It is a purely ideological fork. Some people really didn't like that the Godot twitter account was posting explicitly leftist games (gamedevs with leftist politics? what a shock.) and then they started harassing the devs on github, got blocked, and then forked the engine. It's embarrassing that this is near the top of HN.

It really thrills me to imagine that someone, a hundred years from now, will have a collection of their WhatsApp messages distributed as evidence that they were “one of the early 21st century’s wittiest minds.”

I'm not. Texting as a form does not lend itself to the kind of high thought letterwriting does.

Alright, it's at a kind of uncanny valley situation where we have Windows XP applications running real-time in our browsers. Is the end-game just a universal sandboxed VM that's cross-platform? What do we do next?
Alekhine · 2 years ago
I mean, that was kind of the idea behind the JVM, wasn't it? It's not a terrible idea.

I use similar abbreviations in code editor, for example:

    r0 -> return false
    rn -> return null
    t -> this
    puf -> public function
You can easily find the opportunities for saving typing by analyzing existing code and most used words there.

What editor are you using to do this? I assume it's vim or emacs.

> I would love to ditch Windows and go to Linux for gaming but as good as proton is. I value being able to play my games without hassle more.

I play all my games on Linux via proton without hassle. I made the switch 2 years ago and haven’t run into any major issues. At one point, I was playing Elden Ring hassle-free while my friends playing on Windows faced stuttering issues. I am unable to play sim-racing in VR because iRacing uses a Linux-hostile anti-cheat, but that’s the only time I’ve had an issue. Personally, I’m fine avoiding anti-cheat because I don’t like how it interacts with my personal device. Currently, I am playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on ultra settings, and it has worked phenomenally since day one.

Overall, I would say my gaming experience is surprisingly better on Linux than it was on Windows, and I’m absolutely shocked that’s the case.

For certain games it's still borked. Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is among my favorites and it's unplayable.
