I agree pretty wholeheartedly but as someone who was, "trained as an artist first and a computer guy second" the ability for the LLM to provide functional boilerplate and, "hunt down" those weird problems that can only usually be resolved by reading sometimes hundreds of pages of documentation. I love the comparison-- "just as compilers replace programmers and spreadsheets replaced accountants..."

The one use case where I'm really excited for though is when we (perhaps we have) to where my nieces and nephews can tell the machine-- "I have an idea for a video game could you help me make it?" That to me is the natural extension of the movement to things like Roblox and Minecraft. Ultimately though the, "goal" is to get them to, "real understanding."

“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.” ― Joseph Heller, Catch-22

Love, love, love it. You didn't need to do this but you did and it reminds me of the days when, "you needed to make things this way."

Godspeed you black emperors.

Adult Utah Valley University student here. CS-Humanities dual major. My two cents.

I feel sick to my stomach. Charlie was a pundit but he didn't deserve this. Not at our university. I've always felt in danger at UVU as the whole complex makes Michel Foucault look like a Hebraic prophet. I wasn't on campus at the time- I'm currently attending a guest class at BYU across town.

I'm going to drop out of university. There's no point anymore. The society I wanted to live in as a child has started to eat itself. What makes me sick is that before the announcement my attitude was very, "let's make cynical jokes; he'll most likely be ok..." this all happened 15 minutes away from my house. I'm afraid of violence toward my left-leaning family. I'm currently battling chronic illness (lungs, throat, stomach. Don't smoke!) and I can't take this stress anymore. I love you uncle Douglas Engelbart; I wanted to take on the work Alan Kay did in his life. I wanted to make tools to expand human intellect. I wanted to help make good on the Licklider dream. Now my dream is manipulate a doctor into giving me a diagnosis so I can enter into palliative care and take Methadone until I die.

Wasn't Project Xanadu just HTML with backlinks? I was just thinking about it in the shower yesterday and realized I had no idea how it could have possibly worked for cross-site links, unless the web was either fully centralized, or fully distributed.

It was/is an pipe dream. The whole schtick was that links were visualized so you could, "trace" what you were researching visually without having to rely on jump links. In theory (more pipe dream) the whole topographical link structure of the internet would be capable of pretty easily being visualized by a person.

It'd be cooler if someone hacked the game so parents could remotely/secretly play as villagers like marionettes.

> Technical excellence flows from moral expansion.

I don't know that this is true. Teichmuller was an incredibly talented mathematician and he was a committed Nazi.

*Technical excellence at the scale of institutions over time. Consider Hippocrates. We're all still reading Heidegger despite the hypocrisy.
