Aditya_Garg commented on Preferring throwaway code over design docs   softwaredoug.com/blog/202... · Posted by u/softwaredoug

We had to build and launch something by a deadline in order to avoid renewing a contract that would have cost $x mil. But we discovered we weren't going to finish in time with the resources and the approach that was planned.

So I got approval to hack out a temporary impartial suboptimal version and we were able to take off in time.

This has allowed us to fly for a bit while others finish building out the permanent proper version of that part of the wing.

In fact, during our flight we discovered missed requirements in the original design. This has delayed that proper version's release to prod. But I've been able to add that quickly to my hack and keep us flying.

My hack doubles as a production support tool. And as an alternate route if the permanent version needs to be paused because of a bug. Yes it's a partial imperfect hack but it has benefits.

Someone has complained about the language I used since it is less common. But remember, we weren't going to be able to take flight with the existing resources and approach.

We would have needed more and/or faster developers in the favored language to meet the deadline.

If any present employee (including me) had bandwidth and was able to be as productive in the favored language as I was building my hack in the uncommon language, that employee would have been tasked to build the permanent solution on time. That option was not available.

Anyways, if you have an existing production support tool, it's also a place where prototype features can live for a while.

What was the language?

$80k will give you one year of very comfortable life in Central Europe. If you want to live in an international city in a decent flat 4 years is not realistic, more like 2.

In Thailand, you can live very very comfortably for 25k.

My guess would be quite a lot, since the artwork is not something a child would make despite it looking like its made for children.
Aditya_Garg · a year ago
You'd be surprised what kids are capable of. An 8 year old could easily create pixel art like this with the right tools.

I think a lot of the hostility about over achieving kids is that parents and their fellow students instinctively recognize that a lot of the success that comes from education is "zero sum".

There are only so many places and scholarships available at the elite universities, employers only pick the academic "winners" for their graduate programs etc.

When a child spends all their spare time studying and does better in life as a result, a component of this success is actually at the expense of the kids who may have been as bright, but did not spend as much of their spare time on it.

So now should all the other kids spend all their time studying so that they can keep up and not lose out? Maybe...

I'm not saying that any of this is wrong or even unfair - just pointing it out.

Aditya_Garg · a year ago
This is exactly the culture in Korea and other Asian societies. Kids regularly spend 3+ hours after school studying “just to keep up”

I needed to hear this: I have an ever-growing list of books I want to read, with topics ranging from the Mossad, to drug trafficking in Southeast Asia, to how to build better habits, to political theory, and some history.

A few days ago, I tried but failed to remember the name of a (main) character from Narcotopia.

When I'm reading, I'm so immersed in the story that I feel I'm living it. It brings me immense pleasure. But, to get the most out of it, I think I have to switch to studying them in detail, taking notes, etc.

Of course, I'll still read for pleasure, but my reading will have to slow down so I can squeeze more out of it. I hope some other people on HN see this comment and consider it too.

Not everything in life needs to be squeezed for maximum gain. Remembering the names of characters is a lot less important than remembering the lessons learned from the story.

How do I get the 100 dollars in credit? Did a preliminary fine tune, but would like to rigorously test out your tech for my article.

> Python doesn't do typing well

Golang does typing, but JSONs are PITA to handle.

Try parsing something like `[{"a': 1, "b": "c", "d": [], "e": {}}, null, 1, "2"]` in go.

Types are a bless as well as a curse.

Aditya_Garg · a year ago
Thats only because your list has different types. Its a badly formed API and if you really need to support that use case then you can use maps and reflection to handle it.

With only a little bit of effort you can prevent them from becoming obsolete. Most straightforward way is to just reprogram the nfc chip. Alternatively, Just add a redirector, one that maps show names/ids to the urls.

That’s the easy part

The annoying part is reprinting the sticker and attaching it to the card

It will kill marine life, it will cause further pollution, and it won't address the root cause. It is only one of 5 oceanic garbage patches.

They should focus on preventing pollution at the source. This is misguided, even though they mean well.

From the article

>They aim to achieve this goal through a dual strategy: intercepting in rivers to stop the flow and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.

They are already doing that

What are the potential downsides to misuse of health data? Genuinely asking - I'm not sure what someone malicious would do with my health records, especially if it's anonymized.
Aditya_Garg · a year ago
Develop tools for health insurance companies to abuse patients. Instead of denying coverage to patients based on real life symptoms, they can deny coverage due to model outputs that are “based” on real life data.

Since these models are black boxes, it’s easy to hide biases within them
