I'm currently upgrading my home network, trying various options, and one of the headaches is provenance of the equipment.

By provenance, I mean where it's designed, where it's manufactured, who has brand oversight of it, who controls the firmware, who runs the IoT phoning-home servers, etc.

(I don't have high security requirements for home, but I pay attention to such things out of curiosity.)

Put a (Deciso or other) opnsense router in front of everything and use that to control exactly what can talk to what and what can talk to the outside world.

Do whatever we had in the early 90's before NCLBA. I got a perfect 800 on the SAT-I math section without studying or any prep or coaching thanks somewhat to AP Calculus BC (5 on that test also, also without studying). (Anecdotal sample size of 1, sure.)

One downside is they are huge pills (500 mg), and a beneficial effect typically requires taking more than 1 g/day.

Well we do take actions i.e. https://www.unmc.edu/healthsecurity/transmission/2024/07/10/... Literally killing millions of livestock to isolate the spread. Not to say there aren't better ways. Life finds a way. It's hard.

That's ineffective action to enable the industry to continue rather than ending it and doing something less dangerous that won't kill millions. Not all motion is progress :rocking horse photo here: - One of Meta's "motivational" posters

I think that people, on the whole, vastly underestimate the degree to which humans are animals.

There's a word for it: anthropocentrism. And another apt aphorism: arrogance.

The conclusion is terrifying in my opinion. A not yet explained phenomenon or even something as far fetched as "aliens" would have been a more comforting answer than "essentially we can all start losing our mind at once, and it takes very little to trigger it".

Human beings are the most dangerous, potentially-violent, and destructive animal this planet has ever known... and far more dangerous in larger groups. None of us is as dumb as all of us.

TL;DR - The drones sent by the UFOs did it in the drawing room with the candlestick.

The real story is animal ag creates the conditions for selection for more virulent pandemic viruses (and antibiotic resistant bacteria through overuse of the chemically-identical antibiotics given to humans) and yet we don't take the actions necessary to prevent them.

I normally tend to attribute these kinds of things to a rise in socialism/marxism, but to be totally fair I do think at least to one degree or another social-media is perhaps simply amplifying something which has more or less been around since the very beginning. Much like the scene from Monty Python's Holy Grail where the peasant goes off on a tirade about "being repressed" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKIyVnoZDdQ]. Populism is really nothing new! Nonetheless it is very off-putting (not to mention incredibly discouraging) to see so many people cheering on someone's death like a hungry mob of vigilantes. Where on Earth has all the civility gone? We seem to be living in a very cynical era indeed....

The tone deafness is in the silent suffering of millions while there are selective cries of foul by the establishment enablers. Neither are good, but no one is crying for the millions because the rich have made their bed.

This is the society the wealthy and powerful have built, and now they too have to live in it. Enjoy.
2lazy2pwdmgr · 9 months ago
Yes. And it's not money that is the root of all evil but the greed of a small number of grotesquely rich few to the detriment and suffering of society as a whole. A poor society cannot survive and sustain itself in misery and lacking of basic human dignity like healthcare.
