"When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."

It's not so much tyranny that we fear these days but rather the consequences of ceding more and more power to such a corrupt and inept bunch.

Or the realisation that WE are that corrupt and inept bunch. It's not like government workers are a 'special elite' class...

How so? Zillow shows my house as being worth 50k more than I paid for it 11 months ago.

Information asymmetry sometimes defines an entire market (like salaries!). When you take away that asymmetry you change the market.

I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, but I assume that is what the GP is getting at.

The grid powers a lot more than homes...

Right but the same logic applies. Rather than 1 single point of failure you now have millions of mini power generators. The impact of one going is significantly less.

How do you define "personality"? Does the fact that you're capable of changing not get included in that? Is the "new" personality the true you? Or the old one?
1stop · 9 years ago
This is similar to the alternate reality counter proof: If alternate realities exist, and we can get to them from this reality, then they are no longer an alternate reality. If we cannot get to them, then they cannot "exist" as our reality is a prerequisite for existence.

You can say the same for a changed personality :p

1stop commented on What Does It Mean to Be Poor in Germany?   spiegel.de/international/... · Posted by u/nkurz

The genetic distance between a German and an African is many, many multiples of the genetic distance between a German and a Pole.
1stop · 9 years ago
There is vastly more generic similarity than difference... racism is never about genetics, it's always about shared (or not) culture.

The genetic arguement is completely bogus, shouldn't you be removing all the dogs first before you start splitting difference between humans?

You are trying to dress up your genocidal thoughts of the German people as something politically correct and inclusive.

Try to make the same exercise with the Aboriginal Australians: It doesn't matter if they don't reproduce; there's plenty of whites around to take their place.

Why do you hate diversity?

1stop · 9 years ago
I'm confused about your reference to Australian Aboriginals. The majority of them were decimated by disease and out right violent attack from whites... how are either of those scenarios relevant here?

I love it when random commenters point out the obvious problems of the world's wealthiest, most successful companies.

I know, do you reckon Facebook engineers are sitting awkwardly in a meeting with this comment page up:

"Why didn't we think of this!!!?"

Not sure you recall correctly. I checked the Kickstarter [1], and I didn't see anything along those lines in the video, the description (which doesn't seem to have been modified, per archive.org), or the first few updates. If Luckey talked about that, I think it was somewhere else.

The video you linked has competing companies all taking about how good it will be to integrate (valve included)... you are right there is no line like "it will be an open platform" but they heavily imply it will be an open platform

So is it just me who types a reply even when the app knows exactly what I was going to say.. just because I find it morally repulsive.

..and still feel a little bit guilty for being so bloody shallow.

1stop · 9 years ago
Are you shallow? Or is Google's "Intelligence" deep?

I think that's the point of the article: using "smart replies" makes it seem like you're so disinterested in your conversation partner that you consider coming up with your own responses a waste of time.
1stop · 9 years ago
But isn't that a pretty common use case?

Do people on chat with their nearest and dearest? Or do they chat with a mix of people who they may like or even dislike.
