>> “Homeless is a misnomer. It implies that someone got a little bit behind on their mortgage, and if you just gave them a job, they’d be back on their feet,” he told former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson in October. “What you actually have are violent drug zombies with dead eyes, and needles and human feces on the street.”

I don’t usually agree with musk, but he’s absolutely right this time.

You can give it a different name if you'd prefer. But those are human beings who don't have places to live.

And those are not all of the homeless. They are what Musk sees, because they are indeed very visible, especially in San Francisco. But he's making the classic tech-bro mistake of imagining that he knows everything, and what's not directly in front of his eyes doesn't matter.

Those chronically homeless -- the drug addicts, the mentally ill -- are indeed hard to help. Just building more housing won't help them. Even giving them free places to live is often of limited utility. (Unlike the large majority of homeless, who will be able to use it to get back on their feet, and will only be homeless for weeks.) There are ways to help, but they won't be found by just guessing based on what's directly in front of you.

The homeless people we don't see are not the ones rotting away on the street, and most likely will not be affected by whatever they're proposing. The ones who are, tho, need help by any means necessary. I consider it a cruel and unusual punishment to just let them slowly die in public while providing "outreach" that goes nowhere.
