I can't speak about outside the US but inside the US/Canada players in all the major, and some not so major, sports leagues are represented by unions. Many of which have gone on strike or been locked out by owners during contract negotiations.
This is the first time in over 60 years that two out of the three major Hollywood labor unions are on strike, thanks in no small part to the threat of AI to their livelihoods. Basically no one knows what's going to happen next, but the last time this happened, actors and writers made some huge gains against the bosses. It's crazy to think that Ronald Reagan, famous union-breaker, was the head of SAG at the time, too.
In the 70's and 80's stars and writers had the leverage.
Seems like today they have competition with high quality Sports, reality TV, cinematic documentaries, YouTube, and social media.
and none of those other creators have any guild rules.
The business, and the leverage has changed.
The streamers ruined the business, and the content boom is over. Couldn't be a worse time to make demands imho.
It's a strike so hard feelings / big statements expected, but pretty big opener here.
