This is a bug, CNBC reporters. There's no equivocating on that.

Once again, the valuable source of information turns out to be the FediVerse. People are reporting in the #TwitterDown hashtag that they are hitting a rate limit even having posted zero posts today. Some are even reporting the WWW site is out of service, in addition to the official Twitter app. That's clearly not intended.

Last week I observed that Japan was apparently being used as a testbed for future Twitter, when Japanese users reported losing free-of-charge Twitter API access immediately. It turned out to be a closer future than people thought when Movetodon lost its API access the next day.

I said then, about the API, "Don't worry. It will just abruptly stop working on you, on the 9th.". At pretty much 07:00 on 2023-02-09, Tokyo time, going by when the FediVerse reports started being posted, indeed Twitter did just abruptly stop working on people.

Supporting evidence that this was a bug, although a rate limit of 0 should be fairly convincing by itself, is that about 90 minutes in, people started reporting that they could post to Twitter again.

My suspicion remains that this was a mistake, made trying to enact what was intended to happen on the 9th.

... which is in turn supported by an announcement just made that the free-of-charge Twitter API is now re-scheduled to be turned off on the 13th.

It is only a matter of time before they try to charge for posting more than a minimum number per day. #HeNeedsOurHelp

One of the values of having a free, public facing API is that it discourages folks from reverse engineering your private API, the one your UI uses.

Removal like this will just push folks back to those "unofficial" libraries, won't it?
