I've warned several times that banning sales to China would lead to the rapid development of the Chinese semiconductor industry that would take over all such manufacturing in short order, leading to the US and other semiconductor manufacturers lying in the dust.
Seems I'm saying "Told you so." even earlier than I had imagined.
Finally producing 4 yr old tech with unknown yields and costs is not exactly leaving anyone in the dust.
If they did achieve this by IP theft then they’ll face sanctions as well so whether they ship 7nm or not won’t matter if Western countries aren’t allowed to buy them.

6-12 months ago, the Chinese were estimated to be about 7-10 years behind in semiconductors.
In that short time they've caught up roughly about 5 years. Thinking they can't catch up completely, if not actually pulling out in front is pure hubris.
That's what killed most of the US's industries that are now not able at all to compete with the Chinese ones.

Ask Huawei if you think import bans don’t work.
