Wait, what ? Mozilla is taking already more than 8 years to add SHA-2 support to mozilla::pkix's OCSP implementation ? This saddens me, the devs seem overloaded. As the only other open alternative to Chrome based browsers I hope they can stay current.
This seems like it may be similar to Microsoft was doing in 2011 [1].
However, while they are opting users in by default, at least they are being transparent about this, as I learned about this when I received a prompt that was similar to [2].
There's no "at least" about this, it's completely shady to opt you in by default. The fact that they're legally required to notify you in some places is probably what changed.

The setting was automatically enabled by default for me after the 96.0.1054.53 update. Users are shown a prompt like [1] that indicates that the setting is active, but users have to go into Settings to turn off the feature.
An error occurred during a connection to docs.microsoft.com. The OCSP response does not include a status for the certificate being verified.
Error code: MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_OCSP_RESPONSE_FOR_CERT_MISSING
