While we’re on the subject of user-hostile behaviour, I’m getting more and more frustrated with e-mail getting less useful by the day.

Companies sending e-mail from no-reply addresses, so you have no possibility of replying to an e-mail. While they expect me to go through all kinds of hassles with their hidden contact forms on their website. Or even don’t provide ways to contact an actual human being.

Or when you receive an e-mail notifying you of a message in some walled garden. For example my government using a “digital inbox” requiring a complicated signing procedure, while they could’ve just sent the actual message to my e-mail inbox.

In all fairness if the message contains sensitive information, I can see why an organization wouldn't want to have to worry about data breaches from third-party email providers.

I feel the same pain. In my opinion, it may happen a lot because "many programmers" just code whatever they (we) are paid for to code. The progress here would probably be in starting taking full responsibility for even tiny parts of what we produce, with no excuses.
