wodencafe commented on China's New Wave of Internet Censorship: Name Verification for Online Commenting   thediplomat.com/2017/08/c... · Posted by u/malloryerik

Are you aware of how the only people in the US to ever be successfully censored from the public internet for political (as opposed to legal) reasons are far-right websites? This literally happened in the last week; domain registrars (the only gateway the public has to critical public DNS infrastructure) decided to voluntarily censor various far-right websites citing "hate speech" as their justification.

There is, evidently, a fairly powerful and far-reaching population of left-leaning people who believe and are willing to act on the idea that the internet should be politically controlled. I've never heard of this being done successfully against, say, a communist website.

I find it very interesting that your comment was down-voted.

I had never heard of this until now, thanks!

Now the tougher question, what can we do about it?

This is crazy, how can a link be a violation of the DMCA?

Yet another ActiveX-like tech re-spin, we are going back to the dark age.

Having usable and capable _SCRIPTING_ language for web was the biggest achievement of the whole Web 2.0 push, now the browsermaker is about to reverse that

Come on, don't downvote him just because you disagree with his opinion.

That is only discouraging people from expressing their opinions.

From TFA:

The cancellation means there are just two new nuclear units being built in the country — both in Georgia — while more than a dozen older nuclear plants are being retired in the face of low natural gas prices.

So what is going to happen when gas prices skyrocket?

This type of situation is actually the one that makes me believe in the long-term viability of cryptocurrencies. If i were living in venezuela right now, i would buy as many bitcoins as i could with my money, as soon as the president prevents regular currency trading through regular banks (which shouldn't take too long to happen, unless it's already the case).

I don't think they accept bitcoins at the Venezuelan black market

No it is not. It is a movie made for entertainment. We are in reality.

It really irks me how much debate and decision-making in technology is based on bias gained from mindless entertainment and not from anything based in reality.

(I am not besmirching the good name of Terminator, that movie is a true classic)

I would continue this discussion, but I've gotten a ton of downvotes for both of my comments, so it seems people would rather not have this discussion continue :(

EDIT: Thank you whoever took pity and upvoted my previous comments. Everything I say is in good humor, I'm not trying to detract from the conversation about AI.

I think the better question is: Should we really be taking real-life advice from cheesy action movies?
wodencafe · 8 years ago
A fair question, but Terminator™ is germane to the subject matter.

The public doesn't take this stuff seriously enough.

Did we not learn the lesson about rogue AI from Terminator™?
