I considered making my own profile visible to everyone regardless of distance.

Would be cute, kinda like MySpace, but I think would detract from the experience if there are people in your area, unless it was always the first one to show up, and only ever when you first open the app

Installed to give it a look, but, sadly, as expected, nobody in my area, and concerts are basically non-existent.

Great for tabletop RPGs!

Agreed, and then I thought about using it with OpenSCAD to do insets on some dice boxes as well

There's a lot of focus here on the alternative economy part, but I think that's way less interesting than the rest of what this tech offers.

What we really need is alternative moderation. The most fragile/vulnerable part of traditional torrent trackers is centralized forums. It's also the most problematic aspect of social media. A successful decentralized alternative to content moderation would drastically change the world.

wizardwes · a year ago
Interesting, but I wonder how feasible this actually is. The closest thing I can think of is the ability to selective defederate in things like Mastodon or Lemmy, where the host of your instance can do broad sweeps of moderation by essentially blocking instances that don't fit your instance's stance. The issue is that any moderation past personal blocks amd filters requires leaning against an authority, whether that be algorithmic, democratic, or our traditional style of moderation. And really, that's, in a way, what people want, someone who can handle removing unfavorable content before it gets to you most of the time. I'd love to hear ideas counter to this though.

I had my children playing one of the open source Minecraft clones for a few years, but after they saw all their friends playing Minecraft, they wanted the "real thing". It's not exactly the same game, and don't discount the value of shared experience with other people. Minecraft is as much about the community that you play with, and it's hard to get people to play an open source clone that sits in this uncanny valley of looking and playing just a little bit different than Minecraft.
wizardwes · a year ago
Also, the open source versions are usually MineTest based, which is less a game, and more an engine that you add mods to to make your minecraft. That's another added layer of complexity to deter beginners, even if more advanced players enjoy the freedom for customization

Thanks for the informed commentary. I'm surprised that the tools haven't dropped in price faster, but perhaps there is a de minimis based on amount of material / strength / precision engineering required. I got to the site because I have a plan to make a bed frame (poor first project choice I know) and found this whilst looking for joints that might work gluelessly.

In my experience, the cost has significantly dropped, it's just that back then they were even more absurdly ridiculous

If you have an emotionally abusive partner, and don't do something about it, perhaps depression is acting as a prompt for you to take action. Some part of you (your soul, say) knows better, and via pain (depression) is trying to shift you towards a better, more joyful, result. I believe we have an innate guiding system, and that this is how it works - move away from pain, towards joy.

You can fail to take action, you can take drugs to manage the negative situation more comfortably, but, if abuse is the underlying issue, a genuine change of circumstances is required.

Pretty bad prompt to take action then, you know, the thing that makes it harder and less likely for you to take action?

How does a typical smartphone SoC compare to the Wii in terms of processing power? Would one of those running an emulator be even smaller?

Keeping the kidney healthy so that it is usable upon death?

That's not a requirement to be an organ donor though. Unless you have religious beliefs about the sanctity of an intact corpse, then the only potential harm is wasted resources checking if your organs are viable.
