whompyjaw commented on I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13   blog.matthewbrunelle.com/... · Posted by u/todsacerdoti

> I love my M1 Pro MacBook and I wish I could have the same efficiency when running Linux but I can't.

No doubt. And don't forget Apple nailed the trackpad experience too. But I seldom need to use my laptop for 20 hours away from an A/C outlet. It's nice, but not necessary for me.

With that being said, I personally am going to start abandoning the Apple ecosystem with each device that NEEDS to be replaced. I'm tired of features being forced into each software cycle, and I don't want any AI on my devices.

I'm going to lean into Framework (or keep my old T480 alive) and GrapheneOS when needed.

I have been thinking this same thing… Goodluck! I would like my own onprem AI tho. And home assistant devices

I feel like everyone in this thread is assuming this is a good faith move by Australia to help kids in school and with socialization.

I think phones and social media are harmful, but I get the sense there's a political motive behind this. We've been hearing politicians complain for years that they're losing the youth when it comes to long-standing foreign policy positions, etc... And suddenly they ban social media. Rahm Emanuel is campaigning for the same thing in America.

I don't believe they're overly concerned with "helping the kids" unfortunately

whompyjaw · 19 days ago
Maybe. Do you forget that people use to not have phones or social media and they still had independent thought? Just because kids aren’t introduced to videos and comments about politics at a young age, doesn’t mean they’re going to be brainwashed by the ruling government. Societies operated just the same before social media.

Edit: Dont get me wrong, there could be ulterior motives, but kids will have other ways to educate themselves on the happenings of the world beside social media

That shuffling was caused by Apple utterly failing to deliver a major feature, that was a key selling point for the latest generation of their hardware.

"Bad press" for their declining software quality is like people complaining there's no iPhone mini/SE anymore. Apple just doesn't give a fuck. They've joined the rest of the flock at chasing fads and quarterly bottom lines.

What was the major feature? The complete uselessness of “AI” on macOS? I updated and enabled all the AI features and I would ask Siri from my M1 and it failed every time. Would just continuously try with its annoying ping sound and never work. Blew my mind that they let this out.
whompyjaw commented on fd: A simple, fast and user-friendly alternative to 'find'   github.com/sharkdp/fd... · Posted by u/tosh

One reason I haven’t picked up any of these newfangled Rust tools like bat, exa, or fd is that I can barely remember the options for the originals.

For me, anything that isn’t a drop-in replacement for the OG tools isn’t worth the friction. I use ripgrep inside VS Code but vanilla grep on the command line because of years of muscle memory.

That said, I don’t care what language a tool is written in as long as it works. One of my favorite Unix tools is GNU Stow, and it’s written in Perl. Even if these Rust tools were drop-in replacements, I probably wouldn’t bother installing them manually. As a user, the speed improvements and memory safety don’t really matter to me.

There are other languages, like Go, where memory safety is guaranteed as well, and Go’s performance is more than adequate for tooling—with the added benefit of getting more engagement from the community. So I’m not entirely convinced by this “Rust is the savior” narrative.

That said, if macOS or Ubuntu decided to hot-swap the OG tools with Rust alternatives that behave exactly like their predecessors, I probably wouldn’t complain—as long as it doesn’t disrupt my workflow.

It absolutely does not matter what language this tool is written in. That goes for any tool. If it’s better, use it. In this case, fd is far superior to “find” in almost every way. Sane defaults, wayyy faster, easy options (just use cht.sh if you can’t remember) To me, there is no reason to ever use “find”. If I’m on a new system, I just install fd and carry on.

Airbnb has a PE of 22 and is a money printing machine. Airbnb makes 10x the profit of Hyatt, which has a PE of 75.

Use case of hotels might be bigger, but it is a highly contended market. Airbnb has a huge chunk of a smaller market.

Also, the margins are much better on hosting a website than building hotels and paying thousands of service employees.

What is PE?

Do you know of any solid KVMs with EDID emulation and 1.4 DP?
whompyjaw · 2 years ago
Replying to follow (idk if there is a way to follow a thread). I have an Apple Display and would need 1.4 DP

Also got the Level1Tech one last year, very expensive but worth it imho. I use it to switch between my work and home PC many times a day, and it has worked flawlessly so far with two monitors (4k60hz+2k144hz) using Linux on both machines. USB audio, mic, 4k camera, printer and keyboard+mouse peripherals

How is the latency with these devices? I produce music as a hobby and have many connections to deal with and as low latency as possible is ideal. I am looking for something I can switch between 3 different devices basically. Work laptop, MacBook Pro, and custom Linux PC. The 2 latter ones I produce on. Would this device work for that?

This is poetry. I have been working on a personal project for the last 10 years that replaces every other app I used to use - E-mail, calendar, and all the others we all use on a daily basis - and every time someone sees me using it they ask "Wow, this is amazing, how do I download it!?", and the answer is always the same: you don't.

There's a beauty to engineering something having yourself as the target user, and no one else. I'm 100% convinced this project single-handedly keep my mental wellbeing in check, and it provides me with a constant source of hopefulness and happiness to the future - that no company/salary could ever offer me. My exclusive, differential, unique characteristic against the world, my joker card.

Curious, how deep does the DIY go? I am curious what tools you currently leverage to support your tool? For example, instead of using ripgrep, did you create your own easy-grep program? Or anything in that similar vein? Just curious of anything you’d like to share :)
whompyjaw commented on Stop the same song from autoplaying every time you plug your phone into a car   theverge.com/2017/8/13/16... · Posted by u/yowzadave

I didn’t think this was a problem anymore. Checked the date of the article and it’s from 2017.

When I plug my iPhone into the car with USB, nothing plays automatically. Then I select ApplePlay and choose Spotify, Audible, etc.

Nothing automatically plays with Bluetooth either.

Is it older cars that are the problem that trigger the automatic playing from the default iTunes library?

whompyjaw · 2 years ago
It happens to me every time I plug in my iPhone 14 Pro into my 2014 Toyota Corolla. (Doesn’t haven’t Apple CarPlay by default). So as others have said it’s likely because the car. If I were to replace my stereo unit with one that supports CarPlay I hopefully and probably won’t have this issue anymore… thank god. I always thought it was Apple Music. Well, it partly is I think. I never had this issue with Spotify, rather, well Spotify would always start off where I left it. Apple Music almost always plays the first song in my library. It seems if I leave the app open on my phone, it will continue where I left off sometimes

Today in niche requests:

Does anyone have pointers to streaming electronic music (ideally trance / progressive trance, upbeat synthwave[0], or house) that has absolutely no vocals?

I listened to a lot of no-vocal electronica back in the 80s but I can't find anywhere to stream it now, even just as a long playlist on Apple Music or Spotify, without a vocal track being dropped in. Vocals are fine but I like non-vocal/just-electronics tracks upbeat music as ambient or to listen to while zoning out.

I emailed SomaFM and di.fm to ask and they have one stream apiece that mostly fits the bill but maybe there are others out there?

0 - Upbeat because I know about "lofi beats to study by" and that's a bit too slow for what I'm after. :)

whompyjaw · 2 years ago
I would love this same exact thing. I have not found any source that doesn't have vocals. I produce on the side as a hobby and one of my goal albums is to create something like this. 1-2hrs of a mix style album that is upbeat with no vocals.

The only thing that comes close are finding specific artist's that don't use vocals much in their mixes. Cercle has a lot of great mixes that come close. Sebastian Leger's mix might be one of those. But some parts of the mix are a little distracting.
