What brands from AliExpress can you recommend?
upsuper · a month ago
Don't have any particular brand recommendation. I have been mostly looking for products marketed as compatible with Tuya Zigbee. It seems they are manufactured under many different brands, and usually at the cheaper end, but they work well in general with ZHA.

IKEA's Zigbee devices have been some of the more stable smart devices I owned. I wasn't running their hub, opting to run with deCONZ in the past and moving to Zigbee2MQTT in recent years.

I do wish the new range would include blinds; the previous generation (FYRTUR) is out of production, and it doesn't seem like there's a replacement yet.

I have quite different observations. IKEA's Zigbee devices are the least stable devices I own and with smaller feature set.

For example, I have more than a dozen Zigbee smart outlet around my home, and the IKEA one is the only one that ever hang and became uncontrollable, yet its also the only one without a physical button to toggle and without power monitoring.

One of IKEA's Zigbee remote controls I have also regularly drops connection and I have to remove its battery to reset it from time to time.

The ones I bought from AliExpress of unknown brands are, unfortunately, much cheaper, have more functionalities, and more reliable.

Why are you pulling random numbers out of your ass? If a worker makes 60 burgers in an hour and they are paid $20/hr then that adds 33 cents to the price of a burger that assembles itself. If they are paid $50/hr then 83 cents.

Math isn't hard and politics poisoned your brain.

upsuper · 8 months ago
Except it is hard to imagine there to be enough demand all the time to sustain this for every hour they work, and even in case there is, they would be happy busy making so many burgers for maybe eight hours in a row each day. And let's not ignore that making food is also not the only work for those working in a restaurant.

Fiber is problematic as far as LOS and obstacles are concerned. Most launch points are concealed, usually at the edge of a treeline. As far as I understand, fiber creates unnecessary risk for operators.
upsuper · a year ago
Not sure whether they are already doing this, but the fiber could simply connect to a relay rather than the operator themselves, that way the operator can still hide far from the connected system and use wireless outside jamming to control if that still makes sense.

This is incredibly wasteful and will end up being a net-negative for greenhouse gas emissions by crowding out other, more efficient uses of that electricity besides heating things up. One of the first things they teach you in engineering thermodynamics is that electricity is very high quality energy compared to process heat, and that you can do a lot more useful things with electricity such as powering motors or electronics. Electricity generation typically results in lots of waste heat, which you would be far better off recycling into process heat through cogeneration instead of what this article is doing, which is throwing away process heat to convert electricity into even more process heat.

> Electricity generation typically results in lots of waste heat

Typically, but may no longer be true with renewables. I don't think any of solar pv, wind, and hydro generates significant heat in the process of their power generation.

The dealing with the machine rather than people is something I'm willing to run with more than anything, right now.

Software engineering is an incredibly people-focused career. You will need to be able to work with other devs, stakeholders, support, users.. everyone really. Going into a tech career thinking that it's somewhere you can avoid people is never going to work out well.

upsuper · 2 years ago
This is true, but I only learnt about it after many years into this career, and to be honest I don't enjoy it very much. I still enjoy working with machines more than people.

The link should probably be changed to official announcement.[1]

That said, this is pretty dismaying. I've been using Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo for years. Their standalone and non-subscription based apps are perfect for my usecase. Compared to Adobe, they are a no-brainer. But, I don't think Canva would leave them be as is. Either next versions will be a subscription or a rug pull is coming for the existing version.

Canva and Affinity just released another news [1] which makes the pledge that

> We know this model has been a key part of the Affinity offering and we are committed to continue to offer perpetual licenses in the future. If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it.

I had assumed 'Flatten PDF' was to make the PDF smaller so just used it without thinking or comparing!
upsuper · 2 years ago
I agree that the help page isn't very helpful. I had to reach out internally to understand what it is doing and why it is there.

I confess I have never used Canva myself. However, every pdf that students send our way from Canva is basically just series of flattened images. This also applies to the many Canva derived pdfs which I see from job applicants. So... What is going wrong? I will look into it and message you if I find anything new.

Thanks greatly for making contact. Only on Hacker News.

To be fair to your product, it is the only viable means by which a set of slides can be worked on collaborativly and online. You saw that InDesigns collaboration tools suck and stepped in.

I realized that we provide an option called "Flatten PDF" [1] which does exactly what you described: flatten everything including text into a big image per page. It makes all text unselectable and also produces a very large file.

This feature was introduced for printing consistency as PDF viewers and print drivers may render things differently. But I don't think it's selected by default, so users have to consciously tick it to make it happen.

But it seems that our support team sometimes presents this feature as a way to solve user issues, so maybe that's the reason.

Looking at Canva’s pricing page makes me glad I have a perpetual license to Affinity’s products. Now the question is, will I ever get any updates to Photo/Design/Publisher? I don’t need new features, but I do care about bug fixes and such.
upsuper · 2 years ago
> Now the question is, will I ever get any updates to Photo/Design/Publisher?

They answered the question in their FAQ:

> Will my Affinity apps still get updates?

> Yes! We have many free updates planned for V2, with a continued focus on improvements and the features you ask for.
