The other day, I was taking a call on my iPhone, over the earpiece, in my office suite's lobby.

The connection was rock solid, and then out of nowhere the audio just disappeared, without warning … but the call didn't drop. A few seconds later it returned. The person on the other end said they heard what sounded like a child for a second. I was perplexed.

Fast forward a week, and this happens again. I look at the call screen, and notice that the audio is being routed to Bluetooth? Opening it, it says I'm connected to my car. Not possible: I'm here, in my office, took a bus in.

I look up, baffled, and happen to see my wife drive by, 40 feet away, through a concrete wall and some glass.

Damn you, auto-connect. DAMN YOU.

Is she okay?

Are there any services like 23andme that are more strict when it comes to data privacy or that allow me complete ownership of the data? I would love this type of analysis even at a higher cost but I am scared of what might happen in the future to this data on me and children

Health care providers can order genetic testing to help discover how your body metabolizes tons of things.

I recently had it done and it illuminated an entire class of anti-depressant that has very little efficacy for me.

Every single thread on airbnb seems to be dominated by this comment. I really don't understand the FUD.

It is "solved" in usa airbnb too , infact german one seems to have more fees/line items, not less.

example: https://imgur.com/a/FJaKHvS

https://imgur.com/a/1JJLpI0

can someone make a PSA to all the people making this "hosts pulling shit" comment on every single airbnb thread.

And yes you can also filter by total price.

tylermac1 · 3 years ago
To be fair, on the US site it's an "Early Access" feature that is in no way the default.

On airbnb.com.au, the full cost is the default view, and you can change the pricing to USD very easily in the bottom floating footer.

Very anecdotal, but I've noticed on HN that people taking the SSRI Lexapro for GAD seem to think it's incredible, and people taking it for depression seem to be underwhelmed
tylermac1 · 3 years ago
Also anecdotal, but everyone metabolizes these classes of drugs differently. I'm an "ultra-rapid metabolizer" of a slew of SSRIs, so they're next to worthless for me compared to other medications.

Does anyone have experience with the HomePod mini? Likewise, it’s not clear from Apple’s site wether or not a full size HomePod is required to use HomePod minus as part of a full home audio system
tylermac1 · 3 years ago
You do not need the full HomePod to do multi-room audio. I have three HomePod Minis, one 1st gen HomePod, two AppleTVs, and an old Airport Express that I can use in any combination for whole home audio in sync. It works extremely well.

So you are on stimulants now that seem to help with your long term focus? Is there a concern of tolerance and dependency, like coffee/caffeine, where you'll have to keep upping the dose to get the benefit? Sorry if I'm being nosy but this is rather eye-opening to me and makes me think it might be worth speaking to my doc about this.
tylermac1 · 3 years ago
I'm recently diagnosed with ADHD-like symptoms and started on a low dose of Focalin about a month ago.

I can say for short-term focus and motivation it's been life-changing.

I would frequently flip-flop between getting sucked into rabbit-holes and having too many things going on at once. I now find that I can focus on tasks much better throughout the work day. My quality of work has improved as I've been able to better focus my time on what matter.

My doc has warned that over time I likely will need dosage increases, but for now it's been a wonderful experience with very few side effects (headaches the first day or two).

I’m curious because I’ve had kids early. Will I ever be able to catch up with peers who’ve decided their focus would be on their job and forego having children later in life?
tylermac1 · 3 years ago
You will get out of your career what you put into it. I had kids at 24/26 and have found success relative to my peers in the field.

Sure there are sacrifices to be made with respect to career options. You can't (or shouldn't) just move cities every three years when a new job comes up, but working remotely can level that playing field quite a bit.

I found a "Backwoods Surgery and Medicine" book from 1910 at my grandparent's house. Half of the pain-related guidance involved cocaine in some form.

These increased food and fuel costs are largely not transient.

The town itself might very well not be viable anymore. I’ve seen this happen in my own neck of the woods. It’s sad, but the death of small towns like this is just a reality of the economic policy we’ve chosen to pursue here.

Now who is "we" in this scenario?
