There are still suspension tuning parts for major ev brands like Tesla.

I was at a track day last year in my bmw 3 series and there was a Tesla 3 in my run group in front of me, "lowered" slightly with Eibach springs.

How many sessions did it last without access to a supercharger?

> Any contact over 5mph and you are replacing the plastic bumper. Actually have an airbag go off and you are probably looking at a totaled vehicle.

Admitedly I'm not a car guy, but isn't this by design? Crumple zones and all.

tmerc · 3 days ago
Bumpers from the 80s and early 90s were more substantial and outset from the vehicle. If a 5mph impact did anything to the bumper, it took the hit and the rest of the car was generally fine. The bumper was easy enough to replace because it was external to the vehicle.

Modern cars don't have external bumpers and what you see on the outside of the car is a "bumper cover". The actual bumper is under that and no longer spans the whole front/rear of the car to the sides. Many new front bumpers don't go past the headlights.

So in a 5mph crash in a modern car, the bumper cover (made of plastic and held on by plastic) takes the impact and generally gets destroyed. Replacing it costs several hundred dollars in parts before paint (because they're all painted). There's also more labor involved in replacing it because it's so integrated to the car. Bumper covers now clip into both fenders, core support, and undercladding and removal means working with all of those parts, then lining up body lines after.

I think it's less a comment about serious accidents and more a comment on getting rear ended at a stop light now costing $600+ in repairs even if your airbags didn't pop.

1. If people drove the speed limit, there would be no need for privacy invasive traffic cameras. The blame there does lie squarely with the people who can't seem to get that, and who keep killing and maiming thousands of people every year.

2. There are very few benefits to cars going faster. If you want speed, trains are much more efficient at high speed. Fast cars are wasteful and dangerous.

Cars being limited to walking speeds in cities would be great. But failing that, I'm happy with the local groundrule: 30km/h if there's no bike path, 50km/h if there's a raised bike path, and 70km/h if there's a bike path that's separated from the road by at least 1 metre.

There will always be "good reason" for the invasion of privacy. If you didn't actively oppose their use, you're also to blame.

I was into sports cars more in the 90s, so my knowledge of this stuff today isn't great, but I mean it was at least true of most sports cars. Most famously the Nissan Skyline R34. The RB26DETT engine is known to have been under-tuned from the factory. You can get so much more horsepower out of it.
tmerc · 16 days ago
That's different. Look up the gentleman's agreement for why, but every Japanese car from that era had 276hp on paper. The supra had close to 320 as sold. The skyline had a marked boost controller hose that you could remove part of and turn up boost for more power. None of this was to sell a higher power variant using the same parts but software locked. It was all to secretly continue the horsepower war while publicly sticking to the agreed limits.

What do you want to imply with this pithy reply? It's for the life of the car and is not bound to an owner.
tmerc · 16 days ago
There’s no single universal legal definition of “lifetime” for products — it’s vague and often depends on the warranty’s own wording. It can mean the buyer’s lifetime, the product’s “useful life,” or as long as the manufacturer supports it. Courts usually interpret it based on context and disclosures.

disagree, if you mean simple cut key. a screwdriver defeats it.

ok, if you mean a key that has a chip embedded, where the key cuts are just window dressing and the real magic is still in cryptographic proof of "something you have". i am not aware of any such key ever being produced, but i certainly do not have comprehensive knowledge. GM had something close to that.

tmerc · 23 days ago
I think the early 90s gm keys with the chip were just resistors in the key body. They stop reading over time but you can splice in the correct value to bypass

Old beaters are exactly the things that get stolen. Their security can often be beaten with a butter knife or coat hanger. That's more about minimizing the losses, for which it's a useful approach. Running costs tend to be lower as there's little purchase price and no incentive to do expensive repairs instead of dumping a broken one for another running beater.

You should look up what strikers are and maybe check the statistics for most stolen cars.

DJI drones are nowhere near "bad", they're the best and nothing else comes close. It's a shame how they're sanctioned given there's no viable alternative. I always wonder why there's no Western company that has the same product offerings.
tmerc · a month ago
DJI drones are the industry standard because they are very good and typically cost significantly less than non Chinese manufactured drones. I can't currently substantiate this claim with data, but I would be shocked if less than 80% of commercial drone flights in America used DJI. I think the actual number is going to be in the 90%+ range.

There is one American company making comparable products, https://www.anzurobotics.com/. If I understand correctly, these are basically DJI hardware with American software. I don't know if they use DJI control boards or manufacturer their own but their FAQ does mention they license tech from DJI.

I am being downvoted for being real. How is the general populous not aware of it? That's wild. Again, you have to be aware of this. It's like privacy 101
tmerc · a month ago
The general population hasn't taken privacy 101. They get asked to email their id to their doctor. If turns out the doctor also hasn't taken privacy 101.
