That doesn't change anything. If there aren't any harms except that certain people don't "like" a feature, it's not the government's role to force companies to allow users to opt out of features. If you don't like a feature, don't buy the product. The government should not be micromanaging product design.

What product should I buy if I need a smartphone to e.g. pay for parking but I don't want a smartphone that tracks me?

Shut down everything? Including S3? There goes all your data.
timando · a month ago
Turn off S3 requests, but keep the data.

What does a hard cap look like for EBS volumes? Or S3? RDS?

Do you just delete when the limit is hit?

timando · a month ago
2 caps: 1 for things that are charged for existing (e.g. S3 storage, RDS, EBS, EC2 instances) and 1 for things that are charged when you use them (e.g. bandwidth, lambda, S3 requests). Fail to create new things (e.g. S3 uploads) when the first cap is met.

Why does it use version 4 instead of version 8? Version 4 implies that it's random bits, but it's actually not random. Version 8 doesn't imply anything about what the bits mean.

Switching between 500 mA, 2.1A, and USB-PD or QC is technically simple, but again you're making consumer electronics for a very, very small group of people.

How would it determine when the attached device reaches 80% state of charge? Or what the time of day is? How could you program a schedule for weekdays and weekends?

There are good reasons for Chargie to have an app, it's not just there to siphon up analytics.

timando · 8 months ago
I'm thinking something like a switch on the side to switch between slow, fast, and using the app.

> So a solution should probably be done in software

In Chrome you can simulate a slow connection on a slow device via the dev tools. Firefox has a similar feature.

It's not entirely what you're suggesting (which is sort of like Chaos Monkey but for web apps I guess?)

Some way to simulate a slow CPU

If anyone's confused, you can scroll down on the homepage.

I didn't realize that until I accidentally bumped my track pad.

Sometimes when things fit a little too neatly above the fold, it seems like there's nothing below it.

It automatically resizes so even though I have a tall screen, I didn't think to scroll down because it looked like a basic landing page and had links at the top.

I think OP wanted to construct “sand by induction”, but I also think you need more than one grain. If you have 9 grains of sand and add one snowflake, you now have something that’s 90% sand and is therefore 10 grains of sand. Take your 10 grains of sand and add another snowflake to create 11 grains of sand. Continue with each snowflake one by one, and you’ve inductively created a sand pile.
timando · a year ago
You don't need to construct sand by induction. Just notice that snow has the right particle size to be considered sand.

What you want is a receipt signed by the seller. Most sellers do send confirmation emails, but don't digitally sign them. Maybe they should. It would help with validating returns.

There's a startup in this. Maybe for B2B commerce.

timando · a year ago
Their email server likely signs their emails using DKIM.

This feels like it's covered by YouTube subscriptions, no? Subscribe to those 100 channels, bookmark your subscriptions page, and presto! You now have a priority feed of the stuff you want to watch and nothing else.

Maybe you just don't want to create an account, which is fine (NewPipe is a great fit), but it's a bit weird to see you say that "making sure we don’t miss the things we love isn’t YouTube’s M.O." when there's an entire page dedicated to a chronologically-sorted list of videos from channels you pick.

timando · a year ago
The problem is if one channel only uploads once a month and another channel uploads twice a day, I will see many videos from the frequent upload channels and might miss the infrequent uploads. If it was just a list of channels with their most recent video I'd see a new thumbnail and know to check that channel for any new videos.
