Any and all escalation goes in this direction. It's not hard to see. Don't be a fool on purpose.

Even worse, Amazon the company is so economically/culturally dominant that I immediately thought of Amazon the company rather than the most important rainforest on earth. I almost wish we could force amazon the company to change its name.

You've been to the cloud - come down to the canopy.

Canopy Multiverse, from Amazon.

Isolation, better observation of the heavens, doubles as a rookery for sending and receiving grim tidings, proximity to the dungeons and/or tower prisoners in case you need a research spec-*ahem* volunteer.

And if you blow the place up running arcane experiments or attempting congress with demons, hopefully the damage is contained.

Why don't we just make DNS refuse to resolve the domain while we are at it? This mass censorship is apparently the new hotness.

Top comment from an admin:

""" We decided to do this due to the heavy cyber component to this war and the chance of manipulated content. Even seemingly innocuous links could be hosted by someone that is less benign. We certainly recognize that this is a pretty far reaching decision but there are generally other ways for most people to share the type of content that is being described.

As to why this wasn't communicated, there is a lot of things going on right now and sometimes moving fast means missing steps along the way (like sharing with mods). We did not intend to hide this decision. """

So it has little to nothing to do with attempting to censor.

"Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information."

Yes, it is censorship. The what, why, how, shoulds, and coulds of it are irrelevant to the fact that it is censorship.

This attitude doesn't square with the dense bureaucracy, unavoidable surveillance, and complete monopoly on violence that modern nations hold. Especially in a place like Russia, where "organizing" is nearly impossible because opposition leaders have a bad habit of accidentally eating plutonium and nerve agents.

Yeah, I don't get it either. It's not perfect, but it might be the only web institution that hasn't broken down over time, and has done an impressive job of holding itself to quality standards given the absurdly large scale.

Encyclopedias are, by definition, fairly superficial. You could also sit down and nitpick Britannica. The quality of writing is better because they actually have a professional staff, but they have to make all the same hard choices about what to include and objectivity.

Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg come to mind. Wikipedia might be an encyclopedia, but those are the libraries.
