I went digging. APRA = Australasian Performing Right Association Limited ECAD = Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição SOCAN = Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada VCPMC = Vietnam Center for Protection of Music Copyright

CS stands for collections society. In another age CS would stand for the Mafia.

All but ECAD were found from here: https://www.cisac.org/

These collection societies are actually the opposite of the mafia.

They collect royalties on behalf of the composers. If the composer has a publisher, the royalties are forwarded there instead (so the publisher can take their contractual cut).

They are the only way to protect your work if you are unsigned (think struggling artists).

I have an opposite view of this.

Cosmos and Mars, Sun whatever else was there long before us an will be still there long after us. From cosmic point of view humanity does not matter much.

From that 1000ft view humans and whatever we built is natural and not different than colony of ants. We are just sand grains that will be crushed when next big asteroid comes by.

Having pristine planet like Mars has no value besides human point of view "I want". Let alone planets are not pristine they are bombarded with space trash like asteroids all the time :)

Why do we use such anthropocentric view? It makes any difference if there is parachute on Mars? Pollution? Well we defined pollution because it is something we want to get rid of because it makes us sick. There is much more bad things for humans in space than you can count.

What if in the future we could examine the contents of a particular rock from space? Have instruments sensitive enough to detect the remnants of Vogon breath from their visit millions of years ago?

A pristine planet has value beyond 'I want this' IMO - it is an opportunity to perform experiments in an almost perfectly isolated test tube.

As a human, I also find it beautiful. As you say though, this is an anthropocentric view.

This mission is an incredible achievement. The images are as advertised (stunning) and I'm sure all the sciences - and even art - will benefit from the data.

What I find a little sad is that we seem incapable of doing this without leaving a particularly human signature wherever we go.

We arrived on Mars with jets of pollution https://mars.nasa.gov/resources/25672/black-and-white-smoke-... followed by the dumping of the two pieces of trash required to enable the landing.

For all the data we have gained, we have lost a pristine planet - which makes me wonder if we are doing this at the right time.

Spoiler alert -

If you were looking for the controversial 'Harold was smitten in the eye by an arrow' scene, its at the '57' mark.

I'll leave it for others to decide what killed him, but from the lower part of the tapestry, battles in those days must have looked like hell itself.

I agree with you that they've handled badly but I don't know how they should have handled it. Anyone got ideas on how they should have handled it?
snickms · 5 years ago
They should have explained that copyright belongs to every author and singling out one industry as being worthy of compensation works against the spirit of the treaty.

They could then explain how their content uses excerpts of copyrighted material to direct the curious to the source.

It should have then asked for legislation on what constitutes fair use in this context.

If the government insisted on fees, then they should have asked them why news businesses are more worthy of those fees than individuals.

When Murdoch cries poor in Australia just remember that he spun out what newspapers traditionally made money on - the real estate ad business - into a separate company, REA (realestate.com.au), and today it's worth $20B

REA still makes up about 80% of news corps value.

When they talk about news being a bad loss-making business, they're talking about the newspapers that are subsidised by their online revenue and used to control politics in three major large democracies (yes, three - I count Australia!)

> ...used to control politics in three major large democracies

Five eyes my foot.

As you have noted, three of them appear to be completely blind. If they cannot protect us from this, then what are they there for?

The way some people are angry at google here reminds of of Brexit. People are saying “google is out of line threatening to leave. They wouldn’t possibly withdraw over paying for news”

That’s not why. They’re threatening to withdraw because the law requires two week advance notice of algo changes. If you have any idea how google works you know this is impossible.

Brexiteers scorned critics and are now learning that indeed some things are impossible, such as control over borders and regulations and unfettered free trade with the eu.

People seem to have such distaste for google that they’re not wrestling with how impossible Australia’s demands really are. Google has faced similar news demands in europe before and didn’t threaten to leave. But those demands didn’t come with impossible to comply with algorithm requests.

> The way some people are angry at google here reminds of of Brexit.

Indeed. Both are the result of flooding the media with specious arguments designed to make people fight over irrelevant details.

'Google is a grifter' 'The EU are robbing us of our NHS'

Google is not rich because of news articles. The NHS was not underfunded due to the EU.

The legislation is absolute trash, but Google's response as been absolutely abysmal.

They spent multiple days inserting unremovable yellow banners on top of every search results page for every Australian that directed everyone to YouTube. Their spokesperson spoke to users like they were kindergarten children; their literal argument was that the legislation would be "like if you had to pay to tell your friends about a new coffee shop"[1].

They also started running "tests" where they would silently blackhole Australian news sites for a subset of users. They simply pretended that ABC.net.au didn't exist, even though 90% of the content on that site is not news.

I don't know what their PR team were thinking, but they've successfully demonstrated that they both have too much power and neither respect nor care about their end users.

Quite a few people here think that this legislation exists solely to prop up various News Corp outlets.

My neighbour used to have a Dyson leaf blower.

I would wake up thinking I was in the men's room.

To be fair, the Dyson model claims to heat and cool the air as well as filter it - unlike the DIY purifier.
