Having experienced layoffs in both US and EU companies, the difference is massive. In my experience there is very little respect for "the human" being laid off in US companies

People literally would just disappear day to day. I've had several instances where I only found out a colleague had been fired because I tried to write them on Slack only to find that their account had been deactivated

Personally I felt constantly worried working in such an environment and I don't want to work for another US company again if I can help it

There are of course bad cases in the EU, but in my experience it's way less common than in the US

The EU is not a country. Labor laws vary massively between countries.

Some background: Lots of stories in the media in Sweden recently about how murders are now ordered via chat apps. Today in fact, there was one about a Snapchat murder. https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/8qL3A1/uppgifter-missta...

Google Drive has allowed for client side encryption since 2022... This papers first paragraph is false.

Waymos however need thousands of dollars of hardware to achieve this and only work in limited areas. Tesla's bet is a lot more risky but also with a lot more potential.

I strongly believe that once you have everything working it's much easier to start working on the costs.

I could see this happening. Zoom for example already uses ultrasonic sound to detect what conference room a laptop is in for one-click screen sharing.

Not great if you have dogs in the office unfortunately.

> Telegram iirc moved it's lead developers to Dubai specifically because the FSB was demanding info from them, so you could argue that's an unfounded concern.

I'd argue it's not giving us any certainty. They could've moved away to escape. They could've moved away to a nice FSB-sponsored location while making good publicity. Ideally the tech should be good enough for this issue to not matter.

To add to this: and they may have hired a FSB agent without knowing it.

They only require a $100 deposit to get on the waitlist. Maybe I’m too much of a cynic but I’m skeptical anywhere near 2 million people would pay the full price if they were given the opportunity tomorrow.

And there is no refund button for the deposit. I would have pressed it long ago.

It is all so boring, all this AI talk all the time. Yes, we get it. AI is exciting. But this corporate dick-measuring contests for AI... please, can we move on from this?

Its quite the shakeup... How will you design your software now that computers can understand you?

The market is being flooded by Chinese brands... all with deep pockets thanks to subsidies from the state. So many brands in Europe right now: xpeng, honqchi, MG, nio, byd, maximus,... the list goes on and on.
