"Banning" bitcoin is interesting since it basically bans factory mining compared to individuals mining. Because:

The high power consumption used by a heavy gamer (CPU + GPU) is easily indistinguishable and probably higher than a plain old individual miner since you would have CPU + GPU + Peripherals running.

And since there are 1000+ X more gamers than miners, the Bitcoin Inquisitors will have a hard time finding the needle in that haystack by simply examining your electricity bills.

I think you are really over estimating the size and importance of gamers

Why isn't is copyrightble by the owner of the repo?

The answer is, of course it's automatically copyrighted

I wasn’t particularly fond of Saget, but I know that Norm Macdonald (a man I did deeply respect) held him in the highest regard and thus I have this sort of laundered respect for him. Isn’t it curious when you don’t look up to a man “directly”, but find admiration for him through someone who you do admire?

Edit/addendum: I suppose it is kind of like when you’re parent loves a certain musician, movie, comic, etc. You may not find them too entertaining, but you always tip your hat to them due to your parent’s respect.

Steve hoffstetter also has some very kind words about him. His post was how I even found out. But you could tell he had a very good relationship and it was very sincere

Well, it’s not unfair to suspect OD. That’s almost always what “unresponsive in a hotel room” means.

We all know this, now the question to me is are the police under any obligation to tell the truth about these things? If there was a pile of fentanyl laced fentanyl under him, they don’t have to say one way or another right?

I remember when Trevor Moore died (rip) the cause was so hush it was weirdly suspicious for lack of detail. If iirc it was to the effect of “found dead in his lawn”, the family controlled the messaging and the police said nothing at all.

Unfortunately comedians have a pretty long history of drug and alcohol abuse

It's not absurd for your mind to wonder in that direction initially

Antivirus companies are universally scummy anyways. But this trend is going to continue for regular software

short12 commented on Launch HN: Homestead (YC W20) – Lot-splitting to build new housing supply    · Posted by u/seanmp

It says my lot isn't qualified because of high fire risk: Properties that are located within CalFire's "Very High Fire Severity Zones" are not eligible for SB 9 (unless excluded from the specified hazard zone by a local agency).

The real reason it doesn't qualify, though, is that my HOA—my entire city of ~650 SFH homes exists behind an HOA—has stated it won't approve SB9-related lot splits. The city itself wrote SB9 language into its bylaws, as required, but the architectural review committee in the HOA won't approve requests.

Moreover, all homes in my city are on septic systems, and LA County has a min lot size requirement for approving new ones. Some lots are large enough to split without dipping under that threshold, but most aren't; that means we have a sanitation reason to reject lot split requests too.

I imagine that similar developments will block lot splits in these ways. Have you run into similar issues? Have you successfully split any lots yet?

That must be a coast thing for HOAs. A lot of the Midwest specify minimum acre(s)
short12 commented on Ask HN: Why does Cloudflare/hCaptcha care so much about buses, boats and trains?    · Posted by u/erikig
azalemeth · 4 years ago
Google is _the worst_ for that. At least hCaptcha is a bit less culturally specific.

Every time Google blocks me for refusing to label a motorbike as a "bicycle" I get utterly pissed off. And likewise with the traffic lights on the californian skies. Are the traffic lights the actual lights themselves, or the boom holding them up?

I'm not a human very often, according to Google. hCaptcha tends to let me in...

short12 · 4 years ago
Googles own captchas are Satan. Squiggly lines all over the place. Why they don't use the normally accepted captcha is beyond me
short12 commented on Urea prices increase 270% in 1 year   indexmundi.com/commoditie... · Posted by u/copperwater69

No it’s a supply side problem, urea is synthesized from ammonia which is synthesized from methane and atmospheric nitrogen. Methane and in general fossil fuel prices spiked and brought fertilizer prices with it. There is probably also a covid labor component as well.

The family farm is planting a lot less corn as a result.

short12 · 4 years ago
The family farm is a thing of the past. They are called hobby farms
