We're not looking at ratios but rather at absolute numbers, the same way a toxicologist would be interested in the amount of mercury in a person's system (rather than its ratio to other substances consumed); or a judge in how many banks one has robbed (rather than the ratio of that number to one's non-crimes).

People here post a lot of dumb shit. Somebody has to correct them.

Your account has been breaking the site guidelines a lot lately. We have to ban accounts that keep doing this, so if you'd please review https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and stick to the rules when posting here, that would be good.

My ratio of non-flagged vs. flagged/downvoted comments is still rather high. I don't control why other HN users dislike what I have to say but I'm consistent.

Let me start with this. My initial reaction from the first iPad still holds. Why not touch macOS? There is just one answer: Profit. The business is not in solving user problems. It is to create a shiny toy with a limitation which you promise to solve in the near future. I moved away from iPad for drawing and just use it for a second screen on the go. For mobility, I have a smartphone. It is getting ridiculous in an Apple camp. You introduce the last processor on a iPad? But iPad still is not a full laptop or desktop replacement? Why?

Because you'll buy one regardless.

Also I don't know how you can choose to like or not like someone. You either do or you don't.
sevagh · a year ago
Interesting. I feel like I can consciously choose to like or dislike people. Once you get to know people better, your image of them evolves, and the decision to continue liking them is made repeatedly every time that image changes.

When your initial chemistry/biology/whatever latches onto a person and you're powerless to change it? That's a scary thought.

People care about dogs, I have never met a dog that didn't love its owner. So no, you are just wrong there, I have never heard anyone say that the love they get from their dogs is false, people love dogs exactly because their love is so unconditional.

Maybe there are some weirdos out there that feels unconditional love isn't love, but I have never heard anyone say that.

I'll be that weirdo.

Dogs seemingly are bred to love. I can literally get some cash from an ATM, drive out to the sticks, buy a puppy from some breeder, and it will love me. Awww, I'm a hero.

sevagh commented on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure   twitter.com/matthew_d_gre... · Posted by u/eatonphil

It's completely fair to criticise Signal for its weird decisions (like that time they stopped publishing part of their code for a while to surprise everyone with a crypto scheme.

However, when this criticism comes from an insecure competitor that was forced to pay back immense amounts of money for misleading investors about crypto, I wouldn't take that at face value.

Signal is mostly fine with some weird/bad decisions. Telegram is worse in every single way.

All of that said, I've never seen any of the cryptocurrency shit show up in my phone. Is it geofenced or something?

It's exactly as hidden/opt-in as the Stripe crypto settings, where Stripe was completely shit on in 20 comments about scams, scamming, and scam currencies.

Downvoters hate having their double standard revealed.

Canada is turning into Totalitarian state with no freedoms or ability for privacy. As an expat I’m really sad to see how spineless my fellow Canadians are at standing up to Justin Trudeau and his fascism. I admired the truckers but the fact Trudeau used the War Measures Act or whatever it’s called now to trample their freedoms makes me sick. The fact a tribunal said they were wrong to use it is cold comfort years after the fact and no one was held accountable.

I’m anxious for Polivore but worries he will be exactly the same instead of rolling back the policies Trudeau put in place.

sevagh commented on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)   darrenkopp.com/posts/2024... · Posted by u/darrenkopp

The problem is that the candidate has been assured that they will be asked 'leet' code questions where solving the problem isn't enough, they will also be asked about O notation and how the code can be optimized and whether to use memoization or recursion. This is what the books will tell you, this is what YouTube will tell you, this is what 'helpful' recruiters will tell you.

And IME this is what most interviewers have been taught. They've got a list of sample questions, they've been told that if they give the knapsack problem and the interviewee doesn't immediately call out 'dynamic programming' than the interviewee is a pass.

If you only want to see working code than you are the exception rather than the rule.

sevagh · a year ago
You're all not getting it.

They only want to see somebody who can get working code and a glimpse of their thought process. But from 100s of mediocre examples, the better coder will have a "better thought process."

Same goes for dating. Of course people will swear up and down they "only consider personality." Turns out, they've met 10 other people with a better personality than you.

Just because they're "only looking for x" doesn't mean they'll accept anybody that clears the bar.

The ultimate read between the lines though is that "oh I'm only looking for xyz, nothing superhuman" in a process where you have 10,000 competitors and applicants will still require high performance on your part. It's just a nicety, a meaningless phrase.
