>Change their last name? - that would overwhelm our software, let’s have our operator do that after they call in.

That doesn't make much sense. Either your system can handle it or it can't. Putting a support agent in front isn't going to change that.

I think you missed the point of the parent. All these things are speed bumps and the "reasons" for having them are mostly incidental, as the main reason is to avoid the expense of having any more customer support personnel / infrastructure than is absolutely necessary to function.

> On the other hand, life was secure. There were no bank loans, therefore there were no bank fees or percents. There was no real worry over one’s job or workplace; one was available for everyone. Wages were low, but fear of losing one’s job was almost nonexistent. A person pretended to work; the state pretended to pay him. Living accommodations were crowded and faint hope existed to find a better apartment, but all had a roof over their heads. There had to be, since homelessness was forbidden by law.

> Nowadays, there exist people who yearn for that mollusk-like life.

This isn't an inaccurate description, and yes, it's not exactly a utopian state to find yourself in.

But I'm not going to chuckle at the hypothetical people we're supposed to pity for wanting this; I bet there are quite a few people in the United States alone who would love to have this life, who would love to have a guaranteed job, a guaranteed roof over their heads, and the heads of their children.

I'd almost venture to say the majority of people, and definitely those who suffer from a disability of some sort; especially mental health, where one may not mentally function well enough from one day to the next to be able to reliably hold a job.

> The missing dynamic is that businesses are encouraged to increase growth in profit YoY. > Each year, a business needs to grow faster than it did the previous year.

It is very reasonable for an investor or a worker wanting the business they have hitched their financial wellbeing to to do very well, which means growing profit. It gives the business more strength and stability.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing that this is what investors want. I think the point is that it ultimately becomes detrimental.

Presumably because there's a perception that if there are lots of rich people, they can afford to be gouged.

This begs the question of how many rich people there actually are, though.

1) Is this a wrong way to think ?

2) Isn't this what progressive taxation is supposed to do (or *should* do if folks like Musk, et al, actually earned 'income') ?

How would it be at all backward compatible other than what NAT64 already does?

sedawkgrep · a month ago
I suspect the thinking is that all of IPv4 could have been a contained within the IPv6 space. Perhaps at at the very beginning or very end of it.

Any time you would reference an IPv4 address when v6 enabled, the stack would simply fill in the remaining bits and forward your packets down the line.

This had to have been thought about though, and I suspect the architects of v6 felt it would've been sub-par to what we have. No idea if that's true though.

sedawkgrep commented on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong   derekthompson.org/p/the-a... · Posted by u/rbanffy

This is a perfectly succinct way to put it.

New housing is simply more expensive; so it's marketed as "luxury", and it's sold at a premium to the higher end of the housing market. This reduces demand for the older, more affordable existing housing stock, and with depreciation and wear and tear, the new housing will become more affordable as time goes on.

If you're in a market with a shortage of housing, those with more money will simply outbid those with less, even for older, less desirable housing. I've seen it, where when I moved out of my last apartment before I bought a house, my landlady raised rent considerably when looking for a new tenant, and even then she got a tenant who wanted to pay her over the rate that she was asking for to ensure that they were able to get the apartment over all of the other applicants. Wealthy empty-nesters who were downsizing, and willing to pay a premium for an older apartment in a desirable neighborhood, forcing out anyone who might have otherwise been able to afford it.

So yes, while it does help for there to be some push to build more affordable housing, if taken to an extreme building only luxury housing will leave an unbalanced market, in a lot of cases building luxury housing is exactly what you want to do to reduce the competition for the existing, more affordable housing stock.

I think the entire analogy falls apart the minute you realize houses almost always appreciate while cars do the opposite.

How is this any different than 'breaking' into any other business scene?

I'm pretty skeptical of any advice whose first steps include "quit your day job and move back home with your parents".
