I was once told by an older and wiser scientist that you should never measure the same phenomenon with two instruments. If you do, your entire study turns into an inter-instrument comparison.

This is also the reason why I avoid using analogies when making an argument. Usually, instead of talking about the argument itself we end up discussing under what circumstances the analogy works and when it doesn't.

When I was a younger developer I thought tooling solved all problems. As I grew more experience I slowly changed my mind that some problem spaces require not only tooling but process change. I am firmly in the camp that you don't need yet another documentation tool. The problem is a human/process one, documentation/knowledge bases need to be part of the process. As long as you can search it and its easy to update/create, I don't think the tool is solving much for you.

Lets take it one step further.

You start out thinking everything is tooling. As you grow more experienced you realize that everything is process. As you grow more experienced still, you realize that the world is really messy and rarely ever anything is everything.

Musk's play here seems to be:

1. I'm working on exicting new AI tech

2. Pay me to keep this tech under Tesla or else I'll stick it somewhere else.

Where this falls flat for me is that Musk is well known to over-promise and under-deliver (where are those fleets of self driving tesla's making passive income for thier owners through autonomous ride share??).

I think this is a ploy to regain a larger stake in Telsa after he sold off a bunch of his stock to buy Twitter. If he had some brilliant idea for AI tech then it wouldn't make a difference to him whether it was housed under Tesla or with another company he runs, as he would profit either way. But he probably knows the idea will probably not pan out and is trying to hedge that uncertainty by asking for shares of Tesla.

You mean those fleets that Musk claimed would have a 100% yield?

So he’s extorting $83.5 billion to do his job …or else tank the value of all the snake oil he already sold the public?

The board should fire him immediately.

If they fire him, that will tank the value of the snake oil.

Ilya signed the letter, too, and has posted an apology[0].

He posted an apology because he failed. If he had succeeded we would've said "it was very difficult but it was the right thing to do"

HN loves telling everyone how HN is just for high quality content...

... unless people from SV are involved, in which case HN is flooded with gossip and drama.

"Ilya does not care about safety or the humanity. This is just ego and power hunger that backfired."

Which I'm inclined to believe.

What's with all these people suddenly thinking that humans are NOT motivated by money and power? Even less so if they're "academics"? Laughable.

Isn't ego the enemy of growth or whatever? Projection...

"Participation in"? That makes it sound like he was a.......well......participant rather than the one orchestrating it. I have no idea whether or not that's true, but it's an interesting choice of words.
sdfghswe · 2 years ago
I would event go as far as say that the main reason behind the tweet is not to show regret, but to plant the idea that he didn't orchestrate but only participate.
