I’m vegan, converted about four years ago so I ate meat for decades. I ate impossible burgers for a while after Burger King got them, because there is some nostalgia/novelty in going to a fast food joint.

But I’ve realized that this weird food product leaves some kind of odd taste in my stomach, and not just from Burger King. I’m pretty over these fake beef burgers now, and would way rather have a black bean burger or a garden burger. Those taste light and yummy and don’t leave a weird feeling in my stomach.

I have celiac and often feel the same way about gluten free foods. Please stop trying to feed me gluten free versions of things that rely on gluten to be good. Just give me a rice bowl or tacos on corn tortillas. With Veganism/Vegetarianism it makes even less sense to me. Not eating gluten is not a choice for me, but Vegans and Vegetarians chose this lifestyle because they don't want to eat meat, why make fake things that resemble meat?

Hi Edgar!. One question/feedback that you hopefully take in the positive light it is intended: what is the differentiating factor of this app? How is this different (today) to a shared Calendar? I do see the beautiful UI, but to gain just that I have to overcome the hurdle of not just installing the app and signing up, but also convincing every member of my party to do the same. Whereas a GCal or something like that is something that most likely everyone already has. I'm the type of person who if I'm adding a new app on my phone (and worse signing up!), there's gotta be a good reason behind it.

I love the potential here. I can see adding some unique features, like keeping track of flights / hotels / rentals... adding a splitwise-like "share expenses", etc. I'd like to know what is your vision/priorities for this in the future.

I don't know what the actual website is, but the Dungeon Master for my DnD group sent out a link to a collaborative calendaring website and all we needed was the link, and we just put our names in and marked out our availability. This really only worked because we didn't have to sign in or create accounts, just have the link. There are probably other low-impact ways to handle the authentication, I would probably just use a sign in with google page.

> Some people say you can't tell the difference between Pepsi, Coke, and the diet versions of both, but I certainly can.

I feel sorry for people with such insensitive taste buds.

I can understand not having a preference, but being unable to tell the difference at all? I wonder what other flavors they're missing out on in other foods.

At the other end, yes, there are some sommeliers with very sensitive tastebuds that are ridiculously good at identifying wines.

But I would wager that at least 90% are faking it, or it's all in their head, and the blind taste tests expose them. It's like audiophiles and their need for HDMI cables that cost 4 digits.

at least with wine there's less of an ability to quantifiably refute most of the bullshit

Quantity has its own quality :)

...except Franzia, which sucks.

For those among us who have recently been laid off - Bota Box Nighthawk Black is a decent/drinkable red if you're on a budget.

scrumbledober · 3 years ago
I recently picked up exactly this, not caring much what I got since it was destined for a pot of mulled wine. I had some of it and was pretty surprised how delicious it was untainted by spices and honey and brandy

> be kind to people facing layoffs. Losing your job is awful in the best of circumstances; going through it in such a public and charged situation must be emotionally grueling. Be kind.

At the beginning of covid, I got laid off from a company the day after I accepted a new job at a different company. I had a meeting with my boss to put in my two weeks in the afternoon, but I woke up to an 9am meeting with our CTO where our entire team was let go. Since I got let go instead of quitting I got severance and health care for a few months and was able to file for unemployment, which allowed me to take 6 weeks in between jobs instead of the 2 I was planning.

It was literally the best possible scenario I can think of for getting laid off and it still fucking hurt to be let go.

Seriously, please remember be kind to the people going through this.

I had a miserable job that I absolutely hated before my career in tech. I was saving up money to last me through going to a coding bootcamp and had just sat down and calculated that I needed $X more. I got called into a meeting and laid off and given a severance check for almost exactly $X. I still cried on the way home, even though looking back objectively it was one of the best things that ever happened to me

Soviet Union used to deploy R-9 - a rocket which was "always ready", launching within 20 minutes from the command, while using liquid oxygen and kerosene as propellants.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-9_Desna

So, it might be considered, I guess. Even though Starship looks rather from another era...

Kerosene makes a lot more sense than methane. The only reason methane makes sense for SpaceX is they intend on manufacturing fuel on mars for the return trip.

Yeah that seems odd to me. Chlorophyll largely doesn't do anything with 500-600nm wavelengths, and that's where this LED outputs a lot of energy. If this was a bulb that could switch between red and green that might be useful for dealing with day/night cycles for plants, but this LED seems like it just outputs more green light than normal?
scrumbledober · 3 years ago
A graphic on the page notes that these are designed to be used with red 660nm bulbs. A lot of current grow lights are white, blue, and red bulbs. It seems these are aiming to create the blend of blue and white so manufacturers can blend them with red without worrying about the white/blue mix.

People are quick to point out vehicle crashes where evidence of alcohol is found in the body of the driver, but are there any studies that show how much driving time is avoided due to alcohol consumption?

I know drinking and driving is bad (and so do many others), so for many of us I would wager it keeps us away from driving and many other dangerous activities. Sober me with too much free times starts thinking "lets go walking into back alleys in Mexico or riding motorcycles through the twisties." That's not to say one is healthier that way, though.

scrumbledober · 3 years ago
It may keep you away from driving but does it keep you away from travelling by car? Riding in an uber because you drank is just as dangerous as driving yourself sober.

What's is level of complexity relative to something like V2 rocket engine that was suppose to be scaled for 2000 per month. DOD can absorb a lot of exquisit missile engines even during peacetime procurement, I wonder if SpaceX is going to get into the weapons game. Almost everything Elon touches is dual use anyways, wonder what it would take for him flip.
scrumbledober · 3 years ago
the cryogenic methane fueled full flow staged combustion engine of the raptor 2 is in many ways not a good fit for weapons platforms. It's a very purpose built engine for uplifting mass into orbit.
