scriptdevil commented on The mystery of why left-handers are so much rarer (2016)   bbc.com/future/article/20... · Posted by u/blubbb

Here's a fun test - we're all in socks on a slippery wood floor. I'll give you $500 if you can run and slide further than I can.

Close you eyes and really imagine it (or do it right now). Really feel yourself sliding along, that tingly feeling of almost losing control, etc. etc. Going a little further with each try.

REALLY run and slide AS FAR AS YOU CAN.

Which foot did you have in front?

I'm very much right handed and footed in life, but in this test I can really only do it right foot forward (called 'goofy' in snowboarding) - left foot forward feels super sketchy to me even after years of practice, and I can't slide nearly as far.

The vast majority of people (left and right handed) are left foot forward.

(This is the best way to determine which foot a beginner should put forward on their snowboard or surfboard. Do the test without telling them you are doing the test. If they can equally do both, then it doesn't matter)

Right handed with right-foot-forward as well.

I had been using chatgpt for something similar in the past. I like the fact that you are integrating a timer and music into it. How do you set yourself apart beyond that? Chatgpt, for instance, could also help with things like "I want to work on foo, can you help me break it down into tasks?".

I see a lot of potential in this - for instance, you might be able to integrate calendar integration for picking time slots for non-immediate tasks a la Office 365 which auto-creates focus times. Also, it would be good if I could curate a subset of tasks suggested by the tool as a list outside of the immediate short term memory of the coach.

Hi HN! I realize there's no shortage of note-taking apps, but I wanted to make one where you don't need an account, don't need to download an app, and your notes won't be sync'ed to the cloud, etc. I used to use Windows Notepad for this, but now I use a Mac and everything from Notes gets pushed into iCloud.

If you just need to write a shopping list or jot something down quickly instead of a note that you'll need to keep for a long time, Temporary Note might be useful for you:

- Accessible from any device with an internet connection & web browser

- Notes are not uploaded to the cloud, but keep in mind that they're in the URL, so they might make it into your browser history

- There's a few features for dictation, speech synthesis, fullscreen

- Am considering adding saving notes as txt files, but won't be adding any cloud sync or accounts; it's not that kind of note-taking app

Would love to hear any feedback on whether it's useful or not, or any feature suggestions.

Why not just use localstorage rather than using the URL as a hack?

I’m only familiar with Obsidian, but it’s business model does have an $8/mo sync tier, and a $16/mo publishing tier as well as a $50/user/year commercial plan.

You can easily set up sync using SyncThing or Dropbox or any other tool that syncs directories between devices. I did pay $25 because I enjoy using Obsidian - but I don't think there is anything missing in the free version. The best part is that everything including themes, plugins and themes are synced perfectly between desktop and mobile.

Thanks.

But if one just needs to send or receive money does one need to share one's cell phone number to this 2nd party?

scriptdevil · 4 years ago
You don't need to - you can also share your unique UPI ID which is text like username@bankcode

Which other place do you suggest for secrets? File access is even more common security bug, also may be accessed by subprocesses and even other processes. Cmdline argument don't propagate to childs, but are accessible. I don't know about any other options that would be reasonably easy to use.

I recently used seahash in rust for a similar job. This seems to fall in the same niche.

Interestingly enough he became politically active after India's defeat at the hands of Alexander the Great, and aided in creating an empire that unified the whole of India, which was unprecedented until then.

I don't know why everyone always says someone or the other united all of India - they always ignore Kerala and Tamil Nadu (and often parts of Andhra Pradesh) which were neither a part of the Maurya empire - nor a part of the Mughal empire.
