Surprised trump doesn’t use this to place sanctions on China and up his base’s support.

He's been pretty tough on them compared to past presidents with the 25% tariff, plus he has a sanction bill coming to his desk to sign.

> The Senate just passed a bill that further sanctions China by authorizing the Treasury Department to identify Chinese banks and financial firms which enable the Communist Party regime, and punish them by restricting their access to the US dollar and visas for their executives.

> Unlike past Chinese sanction bills, the restrictions will apply not just to individuals, but the banks that employ them. And it will apply not just to Chinese-owned banks, but subsidiaries of American companies operating in the country.

And I find that great :)

I had the opposite experience ;) And is not the big/small town thing. I actually moved from my 'perfect' place, and it was a 4000 people village :P I actually prefer that! Just my hometown, I don't know exactly why (I have ideas) rubs me the wrong way.

Ah that makes sense. I have a tinge of that but it's probably memories. Eventually we will move out when family is of less focus.

We're young now so it was a good idea to have family close. Eventually we're going to move somewhere even more remote.

Sort of. I moved back to my hometown to an old (and I mean old) family flat that my father owns that is 2 minutes walk from my parents house.

Honestly, I wanted to shoot my self in the face every day. I love my parents, but I left their home and city at 17 and coming back after 20 years just made me realize I rather starve than live in that shitty hellhole I grew up on.

Sorry, not related, but fuck, I hate that town!

As a counter anecdote, I did the same thing and I love the experience.

The difference is I bought a house nearby. It's actually been really nice, but I've always loved small towns and hated the city.

s_y_n_t_a_x commented on Why do so few people major in computer science? (2017)   danwang.co/why-so-few-com... · Posted by u/ptr

There's one other possible, additional reason.

I recently asked a 17-year-old high school senior who is heading to college what she's planning to study, and she said it would be mathematics, biomedical engineering, or some other kind of engineering. She's self-motivated -- says she will be studying multi-variate calculus, PDEs, and abstract algebra on her own this summer. She maxed out her high school math curriculum, which included linear algebra as an elective.

Naturally, I asked her about computer science, and she said something like this (paraphrasing):

"The kids who love computers at my high school seem to be able to spend their entire day focusing on a computer screen, even on weekends. I cannot do that. And those kids are mostly boys whose social behavior is a little bit on the spectrum."

While I don't fully agree with her perspective, it makes me wonder how many other talented people shun the field for similar reasons.

I'll second the statement:

> And those kids are mostly boys whose social behavior is a little bit on the spectrum

I a lot of us are on the spectrum, more-so than other humans.

It's that puzzle gene in us that makes us want to obsess until we figure out the problem.

I've also noticed more cases of bipolar disorder and depression depicted here than in other communities.

There's so few of us compared to others because we are wired differently.

Wait, how the hell do they know what your political affiliation is?
s_y_n_t_a_x · 5 years ago
Your voter registration is public record.

They build this sample data by compiling huge swaths of public records and buying private data.

Your political affiliation is not the worst of it, they can have the school your child goes to, the grocery store you visit, anything.

The worst really isn't the violation of privacy, it's the propaganda.

Most of the time the surveys themselves were meant to push information, the questions and answers were usually loaded.

Source: worked as a CATI technician, typist, and interviewer for a survey company in college.
