I am glad there is a study behind this. However, I feel that it is too late to change victim hood culture though. It has become pervasive in society and the general mindset has changed already. We used to praise those who overcame obstacles, now we blame them for not giving up and joining the defeated.

I'd argue that your sentiment is part of this alleged "victim hood culture". you're complaining here about people who feel offended and hurt on a regular basis. is that really affecting your life? would it affect you if _your_ personality would be what you consider the ideal - strong and unapologetic (as in apologizing when necessary but not just to please people)? you wouldn't give a f...

The trouble is, this is really just them being honest. Within 6 months of acquiring Oculus they started pulling in data from their Oculus accounts and associating that with Facebook profiles based on email or whatever identifiers they can use. Requiring Facebook accounts is just being transparent about the fact that Facebook maintains a profile for you which crosses all of their systems whether you have accounts or not.

I hope the EU addresses the root of the issue and starts cracking down on the shadow profile stuff.

so, you mean a thief who goes to the police to honestly declare what she stole should be entitled to keep the stuff?

Same for me. I was waffling between getting my family a Valve Index vs. Quest 2 for Christmas. The mandatory Facebook tie-in cinched my decision.

I have read "Range" and was underwhelmed. I feel like the idea in it can be summarised in a 5-15 minute blog post.

I also think that this year was probably not lousy for many people, me included, and I'm a bit tired of giving 2020 negative adjectives.

rv-de · 5 years ago
That's the problem with most books. Stretched out like a Netflix production.

When I see this kind of lists I always think of getting some of these books and reading them. However, I feel like reading books that have no relationship with my job (software engineer) is a waste. Do any feel the same? Is this a harmful mindset and should stop worrying about "wasting" my free time?
rv-de · 5 years ago
Well, one could at least argue that reading a book that has no relationship to you in any way might be a waste. But narrowing this down to only your work - yeah, that's a harmful mindset for sure. You are not just your work ...

At the See Also section, there is a link to "Mozart and scatology" explaining it. Definitely not a particular aspect of his life that they teach you in primary school Music class.

Don't Germans already have the right to disconnect? You work 8 hours and then you switch off the company phone. Done.
