Why would it be an embarrassment to say something has outlived its usefulness?
rurounijones · 2 years ago
It would be an embarrassment if the reason it outlived its usefulness is because it got it got circumvented by hostile actors.

Indeed, despite its apparent illegality, China seems to be fairly well-supported and well-mapped by OpenStreetMap, at least in major cities. And is entirely mapped in normal WGS-84 without the obfuscation problem.

In any case, according to Wikipedia, open-source code is available to convert between WGS-84 and the obfuscated GJC-02 coordinates.

Since technology seems to have caught up with it, is there any advantage (military or otherwise) for China to persist with obfuscation? Much like the US gave up on GPS "selective availability" years ago, there would seem now days to be more economic advantage to ditching obfuscation than there is security advantage of keeping it. Is not as if the missiles of China's enemies are going to get confused by China's obfuscated coordinates.

Is it just because of inertia that GJC-02 still exists?

I don't think so but it would be an embarrassment for the government to admit it no longer serves a use and such an action would be anathema to them.

The channel "Reporting From Ukraine" posts frequent videos providing updates in the Russia-Ukraine war. Supporters of Russia have long been trying to shut it down by weaponising the Report button and it seems they have finally succeeded with the channel now scheduled for deletion along with all the channels that features translated videos.

They seem to be unable to get in contact with a human at Google with authority to investigate and evaluate things outside of the mighty algorithm so we are going to lose a valuable resource.

Interesting - I'm curious what the hourly energy cost of Shinkansen is, in comparison.

Accordong to https://transsyst.ru/transsyst/article/view/10739

> The Japanese Shinkansen N 700 records the maximum value for Wheel-Rail systems at speeds up to 300 km/h. At a constant speed of 300 km/h, it has a specific energy consumption of 28 Wh/Pl/km (Watt hours per seat and per kilometre)

A train can carry 1,300 passengers depending on the number of cars.

I'm not sure why car manufacturers thought it's a good idea to have essential controls on a touchpad you have to look at to navigate. I mean, shouldn't you be looking at something else when controlling a vehicle?

Touch screens are cheap and allow for post-release UI modifications.

Can anyone at Amazon confirm how PIP works outside the United States? In countries like Japan it would be illegal.
rurounijones · 2 years ago
Amazon PIPs happen in Japan but I don't know how the process may differ from an American PIP.

If only there was a structured process for that. Maybe we could call it a "performance improvement plan," or PIP for short.
rurounijones · 2 years ago
That fact your reply to a comment about having a structured way to fire someone could be called a "performance improvement plan or PIP for short" is hilarious to me.

It seems you have accepted that PIPs are just a tool to fire someone but still think calling it a PIP is perfectly logical and desirable to the point that you snarkily suggest that this is what it should be called.

Funnily enough, my father is at the 11th international symposium on “Ground Freezing” in London at this very moment. Most of the time you have to freeze the ground before you can drill.

He has been working in specialist civil engineering for many years and builds tunnels all over the world. He has told me many exciting and hard-to-believe stories about tunnel construction and tunnel boring machines.

E.g. during the work on the Eurotunnel. Here the British tunnel boring machine was diverted into the rock near half the length of the tunnel and left there. It was cheaper than somehow taking it out again.

Anyways, since my dad is always very stressed due to his job, I am happy to have gained a foothold in IT and not tunnel boring :D

It has happened for DCS in the past.

The real reason this is always happening for Warthunder is because it's being sensationalized by the media and what's happening is being massively misrepresented.

Every time one of these articles comes out for like the last 6 months at least the "leaked classified documents" have already been available online for _years_. But someone posts these easily findable documents on the Warthunder forums and suddenly the leak originates from the Warthunder forums because it makes a good article title.

One of the more recent "leaks" was just someone posting this easily purchasable flight manual: https://www.flight-manuals-online.com/product/eurofighter-ty...

Has it happened in DCS in the past? I know of the instance where an Eagle Dynamics employee got nabbed due to possessing documents but I don't know of an instance where a community member has posted docs publicly.
